The second Research Meets Industry yet again proved the exceptional calibre of research conducted by MBA students of the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB).

The event, held on Friday 22 November, offered a platform to improve knowledge transfer between USB and industry with relevant, thought-provoking findings across a number of disciplines. Thirty students presented their research according to themes that ranged from investment management, to innovation, sustainability and retail in emerging markets, among others. Attendees selected within specific time slots the topics that were of the most interest to them.

The audience rated each presentation using Mentimeter and this quantitative assessment together with top academics’ qualitative deliberation concluded in Emmica Brits being awarded as the top presenter for her paper Interorganisational citizenship behaviour in competitive networks.

Martin Butler, head of USB’s MBA programme, commended students on delivering compelling presentations.

“This is only the second year we have hosted this industry day and already the quality of presentations have doubled! It’s important to expose students to industry and offer them a platform where their research comes to life. Research is only relevant if it can demonstrate an understanding in the world we live in, test hypotheses and predictions, and provide insight into underlying, complex principles. The most fundamental of these is the relevance to society and business in exploring new avenues, and ways of working and living. The application of research is more than simply addressing abstract principles. It needs to empower society and business with new insight and knowledge, and by doing so, opens up new areas for further study.”
