It has been said that in Coaching, the practice is ahead of the research and our understanding of why, what and how coaching “works” is lagging. However, this is changing fast due to a significant growing body of scientific research on Coaching from all around the world. But why is research important to Coaching practitioners?

Joel DiGirolamo

Joel DiGirolamo is the Vice President of Research and Data Science for the International Coaching Federation (ICF), where he leads the organization’s efforts to study the science and profession of coaching. Joel has published numerous articles, book chapters, and white papers on coaching research. He has more than 30 years of staff and management experience in Fortune 500 companies and is the author of two books, Leading Team Alpha and Yoga in No Time at All. Joel holds a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from Kansas State University, an MBA from Xavier University, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University. He is an Associate Editor for Consulting Psychology Journal.

Jacques Myburgh

CONMENSA Vice Chair for Research, Executive Coach and Management Consultant

Jacques is an independent professional providing a range of services, including executive coaching, management consulting, academic & market research, and training. He is involved with several South African academic organizations as research supervisor, external moderator, and peer reviewer. Jacques is past chairperson of the COMENSA Research Portfolio Committee and currently vice-chair. He is one of the first credentialed members of this professional body – COMENSA Senior Coach (CSC).

Jacques is the founder of SA Coaching News – publishing company of CoachingNews.Africa, the only trade publication for the African coaching industry and coaching profession. His services are supported by a BSc (Information Systems), an MBA (Strategic Marketing Management) from Oxford-Brookes and an MPhil (Management Coaching) cum laude from Stellenbosch University Business School.

Dr Nicky Terblanche

Senior Lecturer and Research Supervisor at Stellenbosch University Business School

Dr Nicky Terblanche is a senior lecturer and research supervisor on the MBA, MPhil in Management Coaching and PhD programmes at the Stellenbosch University Business School. His academic interests include both leadership coaching and information systems. He also runs an executive and leadership coaching practice.

He has an MPhil in Management Coaching, an MScEng in electronic engineering and a PhD in Business Management. His research interests include transition coaching, transformative learning, social network analysis, complexity theory and the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in coaching and management. He has published in several international academic journals and regularly presents at international conferences.
