According to South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP), the agricultural sector needs to create 1 000 000 jobs by 2030. However, current employment within the agricultural sector is below 900 000 jobs and employment growth within the agricultural sector remains stagnant.

There is a need to be informed of the potential scale of these disruptions while establishing new opportunities – taken from a recently published report on the Futures of Employment in Agriculture 2035. Herein lies both risks and opportunities for the youth of today.

Doris Viljoen

Director: Institute for Futures Research at Stellenbosch Business School


Doris Viljoen is a Senior Futurist and Director at Stellenbosch University’s Institute for Futures Research (IFR) where she endeavours to interpret global as well as local trends and assess their relevance for South Africa and Africa. Doris lectures on the master’s degree programme in Futures Studies at the Stellenbosch Business School. She has specialised skills in environmental scanning, the application of foresight methodology, scenario planning as well as strategy development. Her research towards a PhD in Futures Studies looks at the future of work, specifically focusing on non-conventional employment engagements.
