  Leader’s Angle   19 March   USB Campus

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak and the measures legislated by our national government, we are unable to host you at the following Leader’s Angle events:

  • Health care for all? USB debates NHI, set to be held this Thursday, 19 March 2020

These events have been postponed indefinitely. At this moment, we await further information on proceedings in preparation for other upcoming USB events.

Dr Nicholas Crisp

Currently working with the Minister of Health on implementation of the National Health Insurance Fund.

After qualifying as a doctor in the 1980s, between 1994 and 1999, Nicholas Crisp worked as the head of the Limpopo health department. Later he became acting CEO of the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS). His private consultancy work led him towards significant interest in the South African health system, most recently into the SA Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA). He was appointed by Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize as the head of the National Health Insurance (NHI) office and, even before the NHI Bill has passed Parliament, he has embarked on building the system.

Dr Johann Serfontein

Senior Healthcare consultant at HealthMan and Member of the Free Market Foundation Health Policy Unit

Johann Serfontein has 20 years’ experience in the health care industry with a Cum Laude Master’s Degree in Education. He obtained a PhD in predictive modelling at age 29. In 2014, he completed a further Master’s Degree in Business Leadership through UNISA. Currently serving as CEO and national operations manager in the eye care environment, he is a member of the Council for Medical Schemes PMB Review Clinical Advisory Committee.  He has numerous publications on healthcare policy in the South African press and Business Day, based on extensive research done for submissions by a number of health care professional bodies on NHI during the various policy phases. Dr Serfontein also published an award winning novel in 2018, under the pseudonym Jean Cerfontaine.


Prof Renata Schoeman

Head: Health Care Leadership MBA, USB

Renata Schoeman has been in full-time private practice as a general psychiatrist since 2008. As a psychiatrist, she has special interests in cognition and has been particularly active in raising awareness for ADHD in adults and children. She also holds appointments as associate professor in Leadership (USB), as head of the Health Care Leadership MBA specialisation stream, and as a virtual faculty member of USB Executive Development’s Neuroleadership programme. She serves on the advisory boards of various pharmaceutical companies, as a director of the Psychiatric Management Group (PsychMG) and is the convenor of the South African Society of Psychiatrist (SASOP) special interest group for adult ADHD, and co-founder of the Goldilocks and The Bear Foundation


Benito Vergotine

Radio presenter: SmileFM

Benito Vergotine has been on the airwaves since 1991. He started his radio career at C-Flat, a community station in Ottery. His experience at C-Flat made for a fluid transition into commercial radio, KFM, where he spent the better part of 12 years. In 2013 Benito joined Smile 90.4FM. He currently hosts the late night talk show ‘The Honest Truth’, where he engages in discussion around many of South Africa’s issues such as loadshedding, racial tension and gender disparity. Away from radio, Benito is involved in internal marketing for retail clients, production, presenter training and coaching. He is also a voice over artist and master of ceremonies.
