ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Prof Shabir Mahdi

Dean of Health Sciences and Professor of Vaccinology at the University of the Witwatersrand

 

Shabir Madhi is Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Professor of Vaccinology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa; and co-founder and co-Director of the African Leadership Initiative for Vaccinology Expertise (ALIVE). Professor Madhi completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training at the University of the Witwatersrand, qualifying as paediatrician in 1996 and obtaining his PhD in 2003.

He currently also holds the positions of Director of the South African Medical Research Council Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytical Research Unit (VIDA) and is Research Chair in Vaccine Preventable Diseases of Department of Science and Technology/National Research Foundation. He currently serves as the Chair of the National Advisory Group on Immunisation in South Africa and is a member of the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) since 2019. Shabir has co-authored over 460 scientific publications since 1997. His research has focused on the epidemiology, and clinical development of lifesaving vaccines against pneumonia and diarrheal disease. Over the past decade, he has focussed on vaccines being developed for immunisation of pregnant women for the benefit of the women and their young infants. He is leading the first two Covid-19 vaccine studies being undertaken in Africa.

Mr Aadil Patel

Director at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr and article co-author

 

Aadil Patel is the Head of Employment Law practice at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr. A thought leader in his field, he is recognised for his in-depth expertise in employment law and has acted extensively for various employers in both the public and private sector. He has worked across multiple jurisdictions in Africa and globally, and has presented on a wide array of legal topics to different audiences. He is featured regularly in published articles. Recognised by both his peers and his clients for his proficiency in employment law, Aadil’s track record includes having successfully advised and represented several state-owned enterprises, as well as companies listed on the JSE and other employers.

Dr Susan Hall

Philosophy and bioethics expert at Stellenbosch University

 

Dr Susan Hall joined the Stellenbosch University Philosophy department as a temporary lecturer in 2013, and was appointed permanently in 2015.  She received a scholarship from the Graduate School of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University for fulltime doctoral study in 2010, and completed her dissertation, “Harm and Enhancement: Philosophical and Ethical Perspectives”, under the supervision of Professor Anton van Niekerk in December 2012.  Her research interests include Bioethics and the ethics of technology, and she is currently working on the ethics of biotechnological human enhancement and bioethical issues related to the participation of intersex athletes in sporting competition.

Dr Ronald Whelan

Chief Commercial Officer at Discovery Health

 

Dr Ronald Whelan is the Chief Commercial Officer of Discovery Health. A medical doctor by training with an MBA, he was Associate Partner at McKinsey from 2006 to 2013 during which time he co-led McKinsey’s healthcare practice across sub-Saharan Africa. From 2013 to 2019 he was Partner and Head of Healthcare Investments at Spinnaker Growth Partners where he led investments and business development across a range of healthcare ventures and was founder of Healthforce, a leading telemedicine player in South Africa. Dr Whelan has extensive experience in clinical and corporate healthcare spanning more than 20 years and 25 countries globally.

Prof Renata Schoeman

Head: MBA in Health Care Leadership

Renata Schoeman has been in full-time private practice as a general psychiatrist since 2008. As a psychiatrist, she has special interests in cognition and has been particularly active in raising awareness for ADHD in adults and children. She also holds appointments as associate professor in Leadership at the business school, as head of the Health Care Leadership MBA specialisation stream, and as a virtual faculty member of the school’s Executive Development’s Neuroleadership programme.

She serves on the advisory boards of various pharmaceutical companies, as a director of the Psychiatric Management Group (PsychMG) and is the convenor of the South African Society of Psychiatrist (SASOP) special interest group for adult ADHD, and co-founder of the Goldilocks and The Bear Foundation.
