At the inaugural Zoom Hackathon, the student will become the teacher

We look forward to bringing together teams of USB students, alumni, and faculty, across all programmes and countries, via this virtual Hackathon event on 21 October 2021. Please join us – we’d love to see you there.

How to take part

Assemble your team of 3 to 5 students/alumni plus a faculty member of your choice to mentor your team. Your team is to collaborate in order to explain the new Zoom apps in the most comprehensive way possible. During the Hackathon, your team can work either remotely or in person.

You will need to deliver:

  1. Business case presentation
  2. An instructional video
  3. An instruction sheet to explain how to use a particular Zoom app in a specific learning context.

Watch it live!

If you fancy yourself as more of a spectator for this event, book your place now to watch USB students lecture our lecturers on the new apps on Zoom.

The Zoom Hackathon story

In January 2020, the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) adopted Zoom as its official platform for synchronous teaching and learning. Since then, Zoom has continued to develop and evolve in leaps and bounds. With every update and upgrade, our business school’s Teaching and Learning (T&L) team continuously strives to research and upskill faculty with best practice tips and approaches. They do this by using the various learning technologies to deliver a “wow” experience for everyone involved.

However, we realised that all stakeholders have to work together to bring this experience to life. This inspired our T&L team to create the Zoom Hackathon, to get help from our most important stakeholder: YOU – Our customer. Our student.

Zoom recently launched a new “Apps” feature in its Zoom platform. These new apps are in-product apps that are seamlessly integrated into the Zoom experience that our faculty and students have become accustomed to. However, our faculty do not yet know how to use these powerful apps. By hosting the inaugural Zoom Hackathon, the T&L team seeks to explore opportunities of transforming the Zoom experience that we already know and love into a memorable one for all.
