You need to compile a research assignment of between 50 and 70 pages on a management-related problem in your work environment or specialisation. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate how you can address business challenges through a robust research process. This experience will also give you the ability to make a value judgement on research presented at managerial level in the workplace.

The South African Council on Higher Education requires MBA applicants to have one of the following qualifications:

  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8), OR

Mr MC Botha

MC Botha is the coordinator of USB’s MBA stream in Project Management and the programme facilitator of USB’s Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management. He is also an executive of USB-ED’s Centre for Project Management Intelligence. His research interest is the interface between business and project teams in the capital projects value chain, shared services as organisational architecture in a project environment, and organisational dimensions sustaining project management. He holds an MBA (Specialisation in Project Management) from USB. He consults to a wide range of clients in the private and public sectors.

During Year 1, you do 13 core modules of the generalist MBA (in Modular or Blended Learning format). During Year 2, which is your specialisation year, you do the 2 stream-specific core modules of the MBA PM (in Blended Learning format), the International Study Module at an overseas business school, two electives and your research assignment.

Traditionally, project management has been associated with the construction, engineering and energy sectors. Now, newer industries such as IT management, health care management, financial services and research also employ project managers.

Students are assessed on an ongoing basis. The final performance mark is based on online assessments, individual and group assignments, class participation, simulations, class presentations and the analysis of case studies. The continuous assessment system implies that there is no opportunity to resubmit assignments to improve grades. Tests take place between block weeks (Modular MBA) or in between classes (Blended Learning MBA), and not during scheduled class times. Tests can be written on campus or via our secure proctoring service from any approved remote location.

Firstly, relevant work experience is a requirement of USB’s international EQUIS accreditation. Secondly, collaborative learning – where students learn from each other – forms an important part of USB’s MBA. The expertise, depth and value that each participant brings to the class depend largely on authentic work experience.

Tests focus primarily on the application of knowledge and insight into business problems. Hence, all tests are open book and require the analysis of problems or cases. These summative assessments simulate real-life situations and the application of the theory and techniques covered in a particular module. In the assessment of pre-reading, multiple-choice questions or reflective essays are often used prior to attending class. Many lecturers make past test papers available as a learning resource.

Yes, but on a volunteer basis only. USB alumni offer to mentor students during their studies and to provide career or industry advice. This service is offered in association with USB’s Alumni Relations Office and Career Leadership Office.

Academic assistance is offered via a web-based learning environment, various software and database resources, syndicate groups (dedicated study groups), informal learning groups and tutorials for certain modules.

Modular MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and thereafter at the end of every modular block for the following block.

Blended Learning MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and at regular intervals thereafter.

Yes. South African students must pay a set deposit on admittance. 75% of the annual fee is payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. International admitted students pay 50% of the annual fee as deposit. The remainder is due two weeks before commencement of the programme.

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for international applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries. Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for international students. RPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

The MPhil in Management Coaching provides you with the skills to establish your credentials as a management coach.

Overview

The two-year MPhil in Management Coaching provides you with the skills to establish your credentials as a management coach.

This is a blended learning programme that allows you to study while you work. This format combines on-campus blocks (one at start of Year 1 and one start of Year 2) with blended learning classes (15 weeks of once-a-week classes spread over Year 1). Year 2 is mostly taken up by the Research Module, which consists of live-streamed lectures and assignments culminating in a research assignment. This allows you to study while you work with minimum time away from work.

Programme structure

This programme is delivered through a combination of on-campus classes and blended learning classes. This allows you to study while you work with minimum time away from work. You also need to do formative assessments (like quizzes and case studies), essays and assignments, practical coaching, and a final research assignment.

Orientation block and Module 1: Year 1 starts with the Orientation block followed directly by Module 1. This means one in-person, on-campus engagement spanning Thursday to Saturday morning and continuing Monday to Thursday of the following week. This gives 6,5 days of training with a break (Sunday) in the middle.

Modules 2, 3 and 4: These modules are delivered in blended learning format (live streaming, no in-class attendance) in a staggered format of one lecture every Wednesday (4pm to 8pm to allow working students to attend) over 3 consecutive 5-week periods (i.e. 15 weeks of once-a-week classes during Year 1).

Module 5: This module is delivered on campus at the start of Year 2. It runs from the Monday to the Friday.

Module 6: The Research Module is presented in Year 2 as a series of live-stream lectures and assignments culminating in a research assignment.

The learning philosophy is based on the integration of theory and practice, finding your authentic coaching style, international application with local specialisation, practical experience and extensive support. The programme has a strong ethical and responsibility underpinning, which will enable you to become a values-driven leader through coaching.

You will learn from knowledgeable presenters, and capitalise on the thought leadership of local experts who were pioneers in the field of management coaching in this country. Today, most of these presenters play leading roles in the continued development of coaches worldwide. In addition, only a small number of people worldwide have doctoral degrees in coaching. A number of them facilitate and assess on this degree.

You will also benefit from comprehensive support throughout the programme. The degree emphasises the relevance of work-based coaching competence.

  • An honours degree, OR a four-year professional bachelor’s degree, OR a three-year bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma.
  • A minimum of four years of work experience in the field of People Management.
  • Psychometric testing may also be required.
  • Candidates’ previous academic qualifications should be at least on NQF Level 8. If you do not comply with the above, please read the following section carefully.
  • International students require a SAQAevaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. In this regard please contact SAQA at saqainfo@saqa.org.za.

Recognition of prior learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. RPL candidates need to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, they have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (3-year tertiary qualification in a related field). All school and academic certificates are required.
  • Have at least EIGHT years of working experience in Human Capital Development.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Write an assignment of at least 10 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) with references about a coaching topic, provided by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities (on forms provided by USB).

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • RPL candidates need to apply by 31 August each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

FAQs

All those who manage people or who work in the field of human capital development or talent development will benefit from this degree. This includes leaders, managers, learning facilitators, practicing coaches, HR practitioners and learning facilitators. The experience of our students and alumni is that the course is suited to any career that involves managing people.

This programme is presented in Blended Learning format, which combines on-campus classes with online classes (using any internet-linked device). Remote students can actively participate in classroom discussions. The lecturers can talk directly to each student, whether they are logging in from an airport in Europe, a boardroom in Africa or an office at home. This allows you to study while you work and to start earning an income from coaching almost immediately. This format also lowers the opportunity cost to do this programme as it reduces travel costs.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

USB’s Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning is a sought-after qualification that culminates in the internationally recognised CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) designation. Doing this PGDip at USB – an FPI-accredited education provider – comes with advantages like high-level engagement with students and excellent online resources. The PGDip is presented at NQF Level 8, the same level as an Honours degree. This means it can give you access to an MBA.

Overview

This one-year programme consists of one on-campus orientation day followed by two real-time online or on-campus sessions per week. The weekly sessions are presented on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 18:15 to 20:15. This is supported by additional pre-recorded content.

The blended learning format allows you to join the class in real time in one of two ways: via any internet-linked smart phone, laptop or device, or on campus. The online classes are delivered synchronously with the on-campus classes. This means you can study while you work. It also means that you attend classes from anywhere in South Africa. This postgraduate programme is an investment in your career path as it allows you to establish yourself as an expert in the financial services industry.

Once you have obtained this Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning, you become eligible to write the Professional Competency Examination (PCE) of the FPI and to obtain professional accreditation as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®). This designation will communicate your expertise and credibility not only in South Africa but also internationally as the CFP® designation is internationally recognised as the benchmark for professional advice.

The CFP® professional accreditation, which therefore builds on this PGDip in Financial Planning, allows you to provide financial advice that complies with a growing number of regulations in an environment in which clients are receiving increasing legal protection and are also becoming more aware of their rights. Therefore, as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® – or CFP® for short – you offer your clients peace of mind underpinned by an acknowledged qualification. For your clients this translates into high-quality financial advice from an advisor with the necessary qualifications, professional status and membership of a recognised professional body.

FAQs

Yes. Please consult the programme brochure for our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) criteria. You must have an Advanced Certificate in Financial Planning (NQF6) and relevant work experience. We don’t prescribe a minimum number of years of work – each case is considered on individual merit.

Yes, we offer blended learning, so you can do the programme from any internet-linked device. Each of the four modules has one examination, which you have to write in the university’s exam venues in Sandton or Cape Town.

Essentially, you need a good support structure and the ‘buy-in’ of your employer. We share the whole year’s lecturing schedule and assessment dates on Orientation Day (January 2021), so you can negotiate study leave with your employer well in advance.

The lectures are recorded and uploaded to our online platform within a couple of days. So students can catch up over the weekend. Also, the lecturing notes are uploaded at least a day prior to each lecture, so you can prepare in advance. We recommend that students form smaller study groups and help each other stay up to date. We also have two class representatives whom you can contact for additional help. We also use various online resources and train you to optimally use fintech solutions.

Do not fall behind – we cover a large volume of work in a relatively short space of time. Use week-ends to revise the previous week’s lectures. Work through all the tutorials and read the corresponding textbook chapter thoroughly. A selection of the previous year’s tests and exams are uploaded to our online platform. The lecturers conduct a special Review session prior to the first test of each module. Thereafter, the suggested solutions to the past papers are also uploaded. Practice, practice, practice.

Our student body comes from diverse backgrounds, both academically and professionally. Some have been in the financial services for many decades, others are fresh graduates. Although the majority of students have a BComm background, many are Law or BA graduates with the relevant work experience. Law students typically find the trust and estate planning sections easier (where court cases are discussed), but struggle with the investment planning section. We do provide a list of additional reading material, some of which are housed in the USB Library. We also recommend students to do extra prep work and, in some cases, do the program over two years. Ultimately, though, we have excellent internal pass rates, so our students adapt very well.

For RPL candidates: Yes. For other candidates, no. But we do find that those with some work experience in financial planning perform better.

USB is an accredited education provider of the FPI. Our graduates are therefore automatically eligible to write the FPI exam. After the December graduation, you have to attend the FPI’s workshops in preparation for the FPI exam in February (or if you prefer, August). USB also offers an additional Saturday workshop exclusively for our own graduates at no extra charge. During the workshop, our experienced lecturers will take you through a past Case Study exam of the FPI.

Overview

This is a blended learning programme delivered in 6 blocks of 1 week each over 2 years. The first and last modules are attended on campus. The programme content is covered from a multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspective that will help you to manage the complex challenges faced by top-level project managers. The programme requires high-level engagement with theoretical frameworks and international literature, and reflection on national and international project management practices. You will need to research and analyse aspects of project management, and make recommendations that show critical intellectual engagement and independent thinking.

USB’s PGDip in Project Management focuses on both the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide, 6th edition) as well as Prince 2® Methodology. USB is associated with Project Management South Africa (PMSA), which recognises this qualification towards the designation of either Professional Project Manager or Senior Project Manager. The comprehensive last assignment on the PGDip is regarded by PMSA as part of the portfolio of evidence that is required for consideration of a designation.

Passed at a certain level, this programme can provide access to an MBA. It will also enable graduates to gain Continuing Professional Development points to satisfy the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

  • At least a relevant Bachelor’s or Honours degree
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a project management position in an organisation
  • Mathematical skills equal to NQF Level 4 are highly recommended
  • RPL candidates must have at least 10 years of work experience in project management and a portfolio of proven comparable competencies

Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. RPL candidates need to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, RPL candidates have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required).
  • Have at least TEN years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least FIVE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities (on forms provided by USB).

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • The programme head and another academic will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate and make a recommendation about admission.
  • USB’s Admissions Committee will consider the full application including the interview recommendation and the inputs received from the references for admission.
  • A notice of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • The deadline is 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

It focuses on the development of personal leadership, team leadership, organisational leadership and societal leadership (me, we, work, world) to strengthen your capability to grow as leader.

This PGDip is offered as two streams:

  • The PGDip in Leadership Development with generalist modules is aimed at those who want to lead in any industry sector.
  • The PGDip in Leadership Development with stream-specific NPO modules is aimed at those who want to lead in the social sector.

Students select their stream right from the start. All PGDip Leadership Development students (generalist and NPO) follow Modules 1, 2, 3 and 7 together. For Modules 4, 5 and 6, the generalist students follow generalist modules while the NPO students follow NPO-focused modules.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the programme and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

This one-year programme combines on-campus classes with blended learning classes, allowing you to study while you work. This also enables you apply your newly acquired skills in your workplace right from the start. It is better to work consistently and to manage your time well. To keep up and really enrich your experience of the PGDL you should be doing between 10 and 12 hours of work a week. The blended learning sessions will also set some time free as it allows you to join the class via any internet-linked smart phone, laptop or device. In addition, prospective RPL students have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required).
  • Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the above-mentioned qualification, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities (on forms provided by USB).

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Prof Arnold Smit’s teaching and research focus on the contextualisation and integration of ethics, responsibility and sustainability in management education and organisational practice. His fields of expertise include responsible leadership, corporate sustainability, multi-stakeholder process facilitation and spirituality. He holds an Honours in Philosophy and Doctoral degree in Theology from Stellenbosch University. Yes, it is. You may know how to manage well. But to lead, calls for a journey of personal development. That is one of the reasons why this postgraduate degree starts with leadership of the self (me). You cannot lead others (we) if you cannot lead yourself (me). You cannot lead society (world) if you do not know how to get smaller groups or teams to work together (work). It is a daily choice to show up as a leader. This requires a level of consciousness, courage, discipline and strong values. As one PGDip Leadership alumnus said, “Taking this one year to really get to know your own leadership strengths, and where they come from, will bring a sense of clarity and groundedness that nobody will be able to take away from you.”

This one-year programme combines on-campus classes with blended learning classes, allowing you to study while you work. This also enables you apply your newly acquired skills in your workplace right from the start. It is better to work consistently and to manage your time well. To keep up and really enrich your experience of the PGDL you should be doing between 10 and 12 hours of work a week. The blended learning sessions will also set some time free as it allows you to join the class via any internet-linked smart phone, laptop or device. Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. The content of MPhil in Futures Studies is aligned with the professional and intellectual skills required of futurists. You will, among others, acquire consultation and facilitation capabilities, and learn how to manage projects and do stakeholder analysis, environmental scanning, scenario planning and strategic planning.

This programme runs over two years, covering five modules and a research assignment. Research assignment

You need to complete a research assignment during the second year of enrolment which counts for 80 of your total course credits. This assignment gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired to a field of your choice.

It analyses the interaction between a wide range of variables or forces, and distils from these forces those issues that will affect the future of a country, government, entity or individual. It studies the world of economics, politics, technology, demography, social values and other subject fields, both locally and globally. Futures Studies is therefore about acquiring strategic foresight to make long-range decisions in order to leverage competitive risk mitigation and opportunity sensing.

Complete and pass USB‘s Postgraduate Diploma in Futures Studies with an average of at least 65%.

Professor André Roux is the programme head of USB’s Futures Studies programmes. His areas of expertise are Management Economics and Futures Studies. He holds a PhD from Stellenbosch University. He lectures on Economics and Futures Thinking at USB, in other African countries and in Europe. In 2016 and 2017, he won the Best Lecturer Award in Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for international applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries. Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for international students. RPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The course content is presented through a series of lectures and workshops, delivered in blended learning format. With blended learning you can choose between on-campus classes and online classes. This makes the programme convenient and accessible for busy business people and executives. It also means you can study while you work. Students have to be thoroughly prepared for blended learning lectures so as to extract optimal benefit from contact sessions.

This qualification is aimed at those people in organisations who wish to enhance their understanding of possible changes in their long-term future and their ability to respond accordingly. This is important for the development of a growing number of open-minded citizens and institutions capable of displaying a holistic understanding of the social, ethical, political, technical and economic forces shaping the future.

Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education, USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. RPL candidates need to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective RPL candidates applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

USB’s internationally accredited Development Finance programmes are particularly suited to help you unlock the skills needed to develop Africa where it matters. It will help you to design and implement African-driven solutions, and show you how to shape the policies and programmes to make this happen. This PGDip focuses on critical skills that will enable you to work in development finance environments in both the public and private sectors.

Growth initiatives in this context can range from roads and energy plants to dams, schools, houses, hospitals, telecommunication infrastructure and small and medium-sized businesses.

Although the content of this programme is focused on Africa, the know-how and skills acquired can be applied in any developing country. Over the past five years, students from over 18 countries attended the programme.

Blended learning – study while you work
This one-year programme is presented in blended learning format. Block 1 at the start of the year consists of 1 week on campus for orientation and lectures, followed by a series of online classes. Block 2 consists of 2 weeks of on-campus classes.

Overview

If you are a junior or mid-level manager who is interested in a career in development finance, this is the programme you should consider. Students who apply for this programme come from a variety of industries such as banking, financial services, NGOs or public institutions.

This one-year programme is presented in blended learning format. Block 1 at the start of the year consists of 1 week on campus for orientation and lectures, followed by a series of online classes. Block 2 consists of 2 weeks of on-campus classes

Core Modules

The six core modules are compulsory:

Electives

Students have to select two electives from the following options:

This programme provides skills to managers in the development finance environment to enable them implement and manage the design and financing of interventions that will help to grow South Africa as well as the greater Africa. The programme therefore equips lower level to mid-level managers with the know-how to:

  • Provide financial and operational input in terms of development finance issues
  • Identify development projects or policies
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of structured policies and interventions to finance development needs, especially in Africa.

The value of this programme also lies in the integration of theory and practice, and in global business knowledge with African contextualisation. Students are provided with comprehensive support throughout the programme.

To apply for the PGDip in Development Finance you must meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Commerce or Management OR
  • Any other 3-year Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience OR
  • Recognition of prior learning
  • International students require a SAQA evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. In this regard please contact SAQA at saqainfo@saqa.org.za

Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL.

In order to be admitted to a Postgraduate Diploma at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 7.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification.
  • Have at least TEN years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least FIVE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the abilities to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.

Please note that ARPL candidates need to apply by 30 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Not necessarily. You need a relevant Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years working experience in order to be considered.

Yes. South African students must pay a set deposit on admittance. 75% of the annual fee is payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. International admitted students pay 50% of the annual fee as deposit. The remainder is due two weeks before commencement of the programme.

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for international applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries. Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for international students. RPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the programme and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

  • Better understand the complexities of and manage the different development finance resources available to poor countries, especially in Africa

  • Critically to apply research methods and techniques

USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. In order to be admitted to a Master’s programme at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant NQF 8 qualification, such as an Honours degree, 4-year in-depth Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate diploma.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the RPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Master’s degree at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required)
  • Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the qualification mentioned above, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating, in detail, areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment
  • Write an assignment of 10 to 15 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) on a topic supplied by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities (on forms provided by USB).

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification. ​
  • RPL candidates need to apply by 31 August to allow sufficient time for assessment.

Yes. South African students must pay a set deposit on admittance. 75% of the annual fee is payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. International admitted students pay 50% of the annual fee as deposit. The remainder is due two weeks before commencement of the programme.

  • An application which includes full course outlines, number of SAQA credits, learning outcomes, number of class contact hours, prescribed textbooks, method and weights of assessment, and outcomes or topics per class session.
  • Additional work or assessments may be required.
