Project management is universally accepted as a scarce skill. Proficient project managers are in high demand. It is therefore completely understandable that Fortune Magazine has identified project management as the number one career choice.

Companies are looking for professionals who are proficient in both project management fundamentals and key business disciplines such as strategy, finance, operations management and marketing. These highly skilled professionals offer a unique value proposition as they are able to bridge the understanding between the project management and business management elements of the entity. Traditionally, project management has been associated with the construction, engineering and energy sectors. Now, newer industries such as IT management, health care management, financial services and research also employ project managers.

  • Duration: 2 years (class programme and research assignment)
  • Format for Year 1: Choose between the modular format (in-class experience – blocks of classes spread over the year) and the blended learning format (digital class attendance) for the core modules of the generalist MBA during your first year. This means you can study while you work.

Overview

  • Year 1: Students who want to specialise in Managing International Organisations start with either the Modular MBA (blocks of classes spread over the year) or Blended Learning MBA (orientation block plus weekly classes online or on campus).
  • Year 2: During their specialisation year, MBA MIO students attend one on-campus block at the beginning of the year, followed by Blended Learning classes on Tuesdays (16:00 – 20:20) and one on-campus electives block towards the end of the year.

Research assignment

You need to compile a research assignment of between 50 and 70 pages on a management-related problem in your work environment or specialisation. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate how you can address business challenges through a robust research process. This experience will also give you the ability to make a value judgement on research presented at managerial level in the workplace.

USB’s MBA degree aims to develop you into a responsible leader, expert decision maker, strategic thinker, effective communicator and steward of society.

Our MBA is rigorous, as can be expected from a programme with three international accreditations. It balances solid quantitative modules with personal development and leadership skills. Management tools and techniques from disciplines such as strategic management, economics, operations, finance and marketing are important core competencies of the MBA graduate. This is balanced by competencies such as responsible leadership, communication and understanding the role of business in society in order to develop the skills of adaptability, flexibility, self-awareness and contextual awareness – all of which are in high demand in the business environment.

One of the key differentiators of USB’s MBA degree is the Leadership Module which focuses on responsible leadership and allows you to develop your own authentic leadership style. The International Study Module at a foreign business school offers you a global perspective that supports the other elements of this course. Academic qualifications
The South African Council on Higher Education requires MBA applicants to have one of the following qualifications:

  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8), OR
  • Honours/Postgraduate degree (NQF level 8), OR
  • 3-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) plus a postgraduate diploma (NQF level 8)

Note:

  • International students require a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate to evaluate their degrees according to South African standards. USB’s International Affairs Office will handle the credential evaluations of international students free of charge. You therefore need to complete the online application, and upload all certificates to your application. The International Office will, as part of the application process, conduct an in-house credential evaluation after we have received your submission and application fee. Please enquire at [email protected].
  • All degrees undergo a formal vetting process to eliminate fraudulent applications.

Other requirements

  • At least 3 years of relevant full-time working experience, preferably on managerial level
  • Mathematics at NSC (Grade 12) level or equivalent is highly recommended
  • A comprehensive CV
  • 2 essays, showing the candidate’s level of motivation and working experience (see below)
  • Satisfactory selection test results (see below)
  • Additional requirement for students enrolling for the MBA stream in Project Management: A Project Management course on NQF level 8, for which credits can be considered in respect of required electives

SHL selection test
 The SHL consists of a verbal critical reasoning assessment, numerical critical reasoning assessment, inductive reasoning test and the Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ) that focuses on behavioural preferences.

  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours. No preparation is required beforehand.
  • When and where: Applicants need to arrange with USB to do the test online. A link will be sent to you once you have paid the relevant fees. The SHL test is done online from wherever you have internet access. (The SHL selection test is done without supervision although random security tests will be required.)
  • Cost: You can only take the SHL test once you have started your electronic application process because you will need a provisional student number for payments and for the SHL reports (which will be linked to your electronic application). This means you need to pay the SHL selection test fee plus the MBA application fee (in order to obtain a provisional student number). For fees, please see usb.ac.za/mba. MC Botha is the coordinator of USB’s MBA stream in Project Management and the programme facilitator of USB’s Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management. His research interest is the interface between business and project teams in the capital projects value chain, shared services as organisational architecture in a project environment, and organisational dimensions sustaining project management. He holds an MBA (Specialisation in Project Management) from USB. He consults to a wide range of clients in the private and public sectors.

USB’s internationally accredited MPhil in Management Coaching provides you with the skills to establish your credentials as a management coach.

This degree will give you the coaching credentials you need to grow the talent of others, transfer knowledge, build relationships, enhance performance and facilitate cultural transformation. But first, it will ask of you to dig deeply and to find out what it is that drives you as a coach and then to develop your authentic coaching style.

Overview

The two-year MPhil in Management Coaching provides you with the skills to establish your credentials as a management coach.

This is a blended learning programme that allows you to study while you work. This format combines on-campus blocks (one at start of Year 1 and one start of Year 2) with blended learning classes (15 weeks of once-a-week classes spread over Year 1). Year 2 is mostly taken up by the Research Module, which consists of live-streamed lectures and assignments culminating in a research assignment. This allows you to study while you work with minimum time away from work.

The modules (class programme) will be delivered through lectures, tutorials, case studies, assignments, practical work and independent research. The class programme covers the following:

  • Orientation: During this module, students will be introduced to the orientation, flow and rigour of the programme. The various learning elements will be introduced with a focus on what is expected for successful completion. Students also set up coaching triads (for purposes of practising their newly learnt coaching skills during the year, organised by themselves) and get their first assignment for the year, a book review.
  • Module 1 – Fundamentals of Coaching: Orientation to Coaching; Learning Theory and Learning Styles; Adult Learning and Self-organised Learning; Psychological Underpinnings of Coaching; Ethics in Coaching; Continuous Professional Development (The Art of Reflection); Integral Coaching Model; Skills Practice and Supervision.
  • Module 2 – Business Coaching: Coaching Frameworks; The Business Coaching Process; Coaching for Performance; Experiential Models of Coaching; Continuous Professional Development, Assignment, Case Studies, Skills Practice and Supervision.
  • Module 3 – Leadership Coaching: Coaching for Organisational Alignment; Leadership and Transformation; An Integral Approach to Coaching Existentially in a World Characterised by Multiculturalism; Reflective practice; Assignment, Skills Practice and Supervision.
  • Module 4 – Team Coaching: Team Coaching; Ubuntu Coaching (African perspective on coaching); Personal Construct Psychology Coaching; An Experiential Approach to Coaching; Skills Practice.
  • Module 5 – Professional Assessment: Professional Assessment of the Student’s Learning Journey; Practical Assessment of Coaching Model and Framework; Practical Assessment of Coaching Ability through a Panel Demonstration.
  • Module 6 – Research: The Research Module consists of a series of lectures and assignments during the second year, leading up to a final research report. Students are supported by a research supervisor during this time.

The learning philosophy is based on the integration of theory and practice, finding your authentic coaching style, international application with local specialisation, practical experience and extensive support. The programme has a strong ethical and responsibility underpinning, which will enable you to become a values-driven leader through coaching.

You will learn from knowledgeable presenters, and capitalise on the thought leadership of local experts who were pioneers in the field of management coaching in this country. Today, most of these presenters play leading roles in the continued development of coaches worldwide. In addition, only a small number of people worldwide have doctoral degrees in coaching. A number of them facilitate and assess on this degree.

You will also benefit from comprehensive support throughout the programme. The degree emphasises the relevance of work-based coaching competence.

  • Academic qualifications: An honours degree, OR a 4-year professional bachelor’s degree, OR a 3-year bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma. Candidates’ previous academic qualifications should be at least on NQF Level 8. If you do not comply with these requirements, please read the How to apply section carefully.
  • Work experience: A minimum of 4 years of work experience in the field of people management.
  • Psychometric testing: This may also be required.
  • Essays: Write two essays – one on your motivation and one on coaching research (see details below).

Write a motivational essay

Write a reflective and comprehensive essay on the following:

  • How does your learning journey to date reflect your personal growth towards becoming a coach?
  • How does this awareness motivate you to do the MPhil in Management Coaching?
  • How do you intend to cope with the high volume of learning hours, reading and coaching which you will be required to manage?
  • What do you expect to gain from this learning journey?
  • Why should you be admitted to this programme?

Write a coaching research essay

Do some searching on Google and write an essay describing and comparing any two of the following coaching approaches: solution-focused coaching, cognitive behavioural coaching, and narrative coaching. Which one do you like best and why? Please include references. Word count: around 500 words.

Recognition of prior learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. Candidates who wish to be admitted under the RPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (3-year tertiary qualification in a related field) All school and academic certificates are required.
  • Have at least EIGHT years of working experience in Human Capital Development.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Write an assignment of at least 10 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) with references about a coaching topic, provided by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities.  These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Overview

This one-year programme consists of one on-campus orientation day followed by two real-time online or on-campus sessions per week. The weekly sessions are presented on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 18:15 to 20:15. This is supported by additional pre-recorded content.

The blended learning format allows you to join the class in real time in one of two ways: via any internet-linked smart phone, laptop or device, or on campus. The online classes are delivered synchronously with the on-campus classes. This means you can study while you work. It also means that you attend classes from anywhere in South Africa. This postgraduate programme is an investment in your career path as it allows you to establish yourself as an expert in the financial services industry.

Once you have obtained this Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning, you become eligible to write the Professional Competency Examination (PCE) of the FPI and to obtain professional accreditation as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®). This designation will communicate your expertise and credibility not only in South Africa but also internationally as the CFP® designation is internationally recognised as the benchmark for professional advice.

The CFP® professional accreditation, which therefore builds on this PGDip in Financial Planning, allows you to provide financial advice that complies with a growing number of regulations in an environment in which clients are receiving increasing legal protection and are also becoming more aware of their rights. Therefore, as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® – or CFP® for short – you offer your clients peace of mind underpinned by an acknowledged qualification. For your clients this translates into high-quality financial advice from an advisor with the necessary qualifications, professional status and membership of a recognised professional body.

What you need to apply

  • Regular applicants: A relevant Bachelor’s degree (e.g. BCom, LLB or BBusSc) at NQF level 6 (old) or 7 (new) or equivalent
  • RPL candidates: An Advanced Certificate in Financial Planning at NQF level 6 from an FPI-accredited education provider, with at least 5 years’ work experience (see USB’s RPL policy for this option). Applicants are requested to submit details of employment for the previous 5 years.

Note: International qualifications require a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. USB’s International Affairs Office will handle your credential evaluation free of charge. Please enquire at [email protected].

Recognition of Prior Learning
USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. RPL candidates should have a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 6. RPL candidates need to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, they have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an Advanced Certificate in Financial Planning at NQF level 6 from an FPI-accredited education provider
  • Have at least 5 years of relevant working experience after obtaining a school-leaving certificate
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities (on forms provided by USB).

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • The programme head and another academic will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate and make a recommendation about admission.
  • USB’s Admissions Committee will consider the full application including the interview recommendation and the inputs received from the references for admission.
  • A notice of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October to allow sufficient time for the assessment.

FAQs

Yes. Please consult the programme brochure for our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) criteria. You must have an Advanced Certificate in Financial Planning (NQF6) and relevant work experience. We don’t prescribe a minimum number of years of work – each case is considered on individual merit.

Yes, we offer blended learning, so you can do the programme from any internet-linked device. Each of the four modules has one examination. The examinations are done online in Excel. RPNow will be switched on for proctoring.

Essentially, you need a good support structure and the ‘buy-in’ of your employer. We share the whole year’s lecturing schedule and assessment dates on Orientation Day (January each year), so you can negotiate study leave with your employer well in advance.

The lectures are recorded and uploaded to our online platform within a couple of days. So students can catch up over the weekend. Also, the lecturing notes are uploaded at least a day prior to each lecture, so you can prepare in advance. We recommend that students form smaller study groups and help each other stay up to date. We also have two class representatives whom you can contact for additional help. We also use various online resources and train you to optimally use fintech solutions.

Do not fall behind – we cover a large volume of work in a relatively short space of time. Use week-ends to revise the previous week’s lectures. Work through all the tutorials and read the corresponding textbook chapter thoroughly. A selection of the previous year’s tests and exams are uploaded to our online platform. The lecturers conduct a special Review session prior to the first test of each module. Thereafter, the suggested solutions to the past papers are also uploaded. Practice, practice, practice.

Our student body comes from diverse backgrounds, both academically and professionally. Some have been in the financial services for many decades, others are fresh graduates. Although the majority of students have a BComm background, many are Law or BA graduates with the relevant work experience. Law students typically find the trust and estate planning sections easier (where court cases are discussed), but struggle with the investment planning section. We do provide a list of additional reading material, some of which are housed in the USB Library. We also recommend students to do extra prep work and, in some cases, do the program over two years. Ultimately, though, we have excellent internal pass rates, so our students adapt very well.

For RPL candidates: Yes. For other candidates, no. But we do find that those with some work experience in financial planning perform better.

USB is an accredited education provider of the FPI. Our graduates are therefore automatically eligible to write the FPI exam. After the December graduation, you have to attend the FPI’s workshops in preparation for the FPI exam in February (or if you prefer, August). USB also offers an additional Saturday workshop exclusively for our own graduates at no extra charge. During the workshop, our experienced lecturers will take you through a past Case Study exam of the FPI.

Foundation phase modules and specialisation phase modules

The modules of the PGDip in Project Management are split into a foundation phase (covering skills, frameworks and tools you can apply in any field of work) and a specialisation phase (programme-specific modules).

Classes are presented on Tuesday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15, and for some foundation modules on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15. USB’s internationally accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management focuses on the business management of projects. This will allow you to confidently manage and contextualise projects in a competitive business. It is the only qualification of its kind delivered by a business school in South Africa.

The programme content is covered from a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective that will help you to understand and manage the complex challenges faced by top-level project managers. A natural progression after completing the PGDip PM will be to consider our MBA with the Project Management focal area. This qualification capacitates managers to deal with project strategy on portfolio and sponsorship level.

This postgraduate programme requires high-level engagement with theoretical frameworks and international literature, and reflection on national and international project management practices. Among others, students will be asked to formulate recommendations that indicate critical thinking.

This PGDip reflects on both the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide, 6th edition) as well as Prince 2® Methodology.

Students will also benefit from the business school’s collaboration with leading project management bodies locally and globally. USB has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Project Management Institute South Africa Chapter.  The Project Management Institute is the world’s leading not-for-profit professional membership organisation for the project management profession. USB is also associated with Project Management South Africa (PMSA), which recognises this qualification towards the designation of either Professional Project Manager or Senior Project Manager.

Academic qualifications and other admission criteria

  • Academic qualifications: At least a relevant Bachelor’s or Honours degree
  • Work experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a project management position in an organisation
  • Selection test: SHL selection test (see below). This test is done online.
  • Essay: You need to write an essay (see below).
  • Additional documentation: A comprehensive CV indicating your work experience.
  • Highly recommended: Mathematical skills equal to NQF Level 4

SHL selection test

You need to complete the SHL abilities selection test as part of your application process. The test consists of verbal, numerical and inductive reasoning tests that are used for selection, and identification of your development areas.

  • Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Preparation: No preparation is required. You are encouraged to perform a practice test to familiarise yourself with the test format at: shl.com/shldirect/en-us/practice-tests/
  • How: The SHL test is online. You will be provided with a link after payment of the relevant fees.
  • When: You can only take the SHL test after starting your application because you will need a provisional student number. The link to the test is supplied after payment of the SHL selection test fee plus the PGDip in Project Management application fee.

  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.

This will allow you to confidently manage and contextualise projects in a competitive business. It is the only qualification of its kind delivered by a business school in South Africa.

The programme content is covered from a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective that will help you to understand and manage the complex challenges faced by top-level project managers. A natural progression after completing the PGDip PM will be to consider our MBA with the Project Management focal area. This qualification capacitates managers to deal with project strategy on portfolio and sponsorship level.

This postgraduate programme requires high-level engagement with theoretical frameworks and international literature, and reflection on national and international project management practices. Among others, students will be asked to formulate recommendations that indicate critical thinking.

This PGDip reflects on both the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide, 6th edition) as well as Prince 2® Methodology.

Students will also benefit from the business school’s collaboration with leading project management bodies locally and globally. USB has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Project Management Institute South Africa Chapter.  The Project Management Institute is the world’s leading not-for-profit professional membership organisation for the project management profession. USB is also associated with Project Management South Africa (PMSA), which recognises this qualification towards the designation of either Professional Project Manager or Senior Project Manager.

Academic qualifications and other admission criteria

  • Academic qualifications: At least a relevant Bachelor’s or Honours degree
  • Work experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in a project management position in an organisation
  • Selection test: SHL selection test (see below). This test is done online.
  • Essay: You need to write an essay (see below).
  • Additional documentation: A comprehensive CV indicating your work experience.
  • Highly recommended: Mathematical skills equal to NQF Level 4

SHL selection test

You need to complete the SHL abilities selection test as part of your application process. The test consists of verbal, numerical and inductive reasoning tests that are used for selection, and identification of your development areas.

  • Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Preparation: No preparation is required. You are encouraged to perform a practice test to familiarise yourself with the test format at: shl.com/shldirect/en-us/practice-tests/
  • How: The SHL test is online. You will be provided with a link after payment of the relevant fees.
  • When: You can only take the SHL test after starting your application because you will need a provisional student number. The link to the test is supplied after payment of the SHL selection test fee plus the PGDip in Project Management application fee.

Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education, USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. RPL candidates need to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective RPL candidates applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification.
  • Have at least ten years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least five years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

For this PGDip, the blended learning classes are presented as late-afternoon classes (from 16:00 till 20:15) once every week for those doing their PGDip over 1 year, or once every fortnight for those doing their PGDip over 2 years. The blended learning classes are presented online (and also on campus depending on Covid restrictions). The flexibility of digital class attendance means minimum time away from work. This also lowers the opportunity cost to obtain this PGDip as you can attend all classes online.

The modular classes are presented as four full blocks of classes spread over the year if you are doing the 1-year PGDip (i.e. morning and afternoon classes from Monday to Friday), or four blocks of either morning or afternoon classes per year if you are doing the two-year PGDip (i.e. morning or afternoon classes from Monday to Friday). The modular classes are presented on campus, which translates into in-class experience and focused studies without work interruptions.

  • Complete a pre-interview screening.

USB offers two Postgraduate Diplomas in Leadership Development – one for those who want to prepare themselves for leadership in any industry sector, and one for those who want to lead in the NPO sector.

Students need to select which PGDip in Leadership Development they want to follow right from the start. All PGDip Leadership Development students (generalist and NPO) follow Modules 1, 2, 3 and 7 together. For Modules 4, 5 and 6, generalist students follow the generalist modules while NPO students follow the NPO-focused modules.

All students will graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership Development from Stellenbosch University. (Focal areas are indicated on certificates – i.e. “Leadership in NPO sector”.)

The programme taps into USB’s legacy of transformative leadership learning where you will learn how to lead yourself, others and your organisation in an ethical, responsible and sustainable way.

In NPOs we find people from all walks of life working together to take care of the most marginalised in society, to preserve endangered plants, animals and ecosystems, and to fight against corruption, human rights abuses and climate change impact.

Leading in this context is both a noble and challenging act, and for most, a steep learning curve. Indeed, NPOs also need to manage human resources and finances, satisfy legal, compliance and auditing requirements, and report to stakeholders.

If leadership in an NPO context resonates with you then consider this PGDip. The content of this programme is rooted in academic research and internationally benchmarked theory and practices. The learning philosophy of this programme is based on the following:

Recognition of prior learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council on Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. Candidates who wish to be admitted under the RPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students under the RPL policy have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required).
  • Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the above-mentioned qualification, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment. The candidate will also be requested to write an essay motivating why they want to enrol and how this programme will contribute to their leadership journey.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Complete a pre-interview screening.

 

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

As head of Social Impact at USB, Dr Armand Bam understands the role of business in society and the need for leadership skills to help professionalise social-sector organisations. Dr Bam is also a lecturer in Business in Society on USB’s MBA, and in Quality and Integrity in Leadership on the PGDip in Leadership Development for NPOs. His research interests include responsible leadership, and transformative learning through social engagement.

Yes, it is. You may know how to manage well. But to lead, calls for a journey of personal development. That is one of the reasons why this postgraduate degree starts with leadership of the self (me). You cannot lead others (we) if you cannot lead yourself (me). You cannot lead society (world) if you do not know how to get smaller groups or teams to work together (work). It is a daily choice to show up as a leader. This requires a level of consciousness, courage, discipline and strong values. As one PGDip Leadership alumnus said, “Taking this one year to really get to know your own leadership strengths, and where they come from, will bring a sense of clarity and groundedness that nobody will be able to take away from you.”

This one-year programme combines on-campus classes with blended learning classes, allowing you to study while you work. This also enables you apply your newly acquired skills in your workplace right from the start. It is better to work consistently and to manage your time well. To keep up and really enrich your experience of the PGDL you should be doing between 10 and 12 hours of work a week. The blended learning sessions will also set some time free as it allows you to join the class via any internet-linked smart phone, laptop or device. Overview

The content of MPhil in Futures Studies is aligned with the professional and intellectual skills required of futurists. You will, among others, acquire consultation and facilitation capabilities, and learn how to manage projects and do stakeholder analysis, environmental scanning, scenario planning and strategic planning.

This programme runs over two years, covering five modules and a research assignment.

Study while you work

Year 1: Do five core modules delivered via on-campus or online classes

The course content is presented through a series of lectures and workshops. This is presented in blended learning format. This is where you can choose between on-campus classes and online classes (subject to Covid-19 regulations). The weekly on-campus classes (4 hours per session) are presented at the USB campus. The online classes, delivered synchronously with the on-campus classes, can be followed via an internet-linked device from anywhere in the world.

Year 2: Research assignment

You need to complete a research assignment during your second year of enrolment.

Research assignment

You need to complete a research assignment during the second year of enrolment which counts for 80 of your total course credits. This assignment gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired to a field of your choice.

Futures Studies is not about predicting the future, but rather about understanding how various futures will unfold. It analyses the interaction between a wide range of variables or forces, and distils from these forces those issues that will affect the future of a country, government, entity or individual. It studies the world of economics, politics, technology, demography, social values and other subject fields, both locally and globally. It equips decision makers with ways to deal with change and to make the right decisions to survive but preferably thrive in a changing world.

Futures Studies is therefore about acquiring strategic foresight to make long-range decisions in order to leverage competitive risk mitigation and opportunity sensing.

This MPhil will provide you with a transformative learning experience to find your way forward – particularly if you see your future self as a strategist, long-range decision maker, consultant or corporate leader.

  • Academic qualifications: Postgraduate Diploma in Futures Studies, with an average of at least 65%.

Professor André Roux is the programme head of USB’s Futures Studies programmes. His areas of expertise are Management Economics and Futures Studies. He holds a PhD from Stellenbosch University. He lectures on Economics and Futures Thinking at USB, in other African countries and in Europe. Futures Studies serves the needs of individuals, groups, organisations and governments that wish to gain an understanding of possible changes in their long-term future and to respond accordingly. This is particularly important in the light of Africa’s and South Africa’s imperative to raise the quality of life. The programme is therefore aimed at:

This programme is conducted over a two year period.

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for international applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries. Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for international students. RPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The course content is presented through a series of lectures and workshops, delivered in blended learning format. With blended learning you can choose between on-campus classes and online classes. This makes the programme convenient and accessible for busy business people and executives. It also means you can study while you work. Students have to be thoroughly prepared for blended learning lectures so as to extract optimal benefit from contact sessions.

For the course-based part of the programme, you can choose between attending weekly classes (4-hour classes) on campus or, alternatively, downstreaming the classes by logging in and participating online using your own computer or device.

Overview

The modules of the PGDip in Future Studies are split into a foundation phase (covering skills, frameworks and tools you can apply in any field of work) and a specialisation phase (programme-specific modules).

You need to do 4 of the following 5 foundation phase modules:

  • Term 1: Understanding the World (compulsory)
  • Term 2: Responsible Leadership (compulsory)
  • Term 3: Thinking Frameworks (compulsory)
  • Term 4: Organisational Behaviour OR Managing Risk and Uncertainty

Next, you need to do the four specialisation phase modules:

  • Term 1: Principles of Futures Studies
  • Term 2: Applied Philosophy
  • Term 3: Measuring and Making the Future
  • Term 4: Futures Studies in Practice

Choose between 2 formats: Blended learning and modular

  • Blended Learning classes: Late-afternoon classes once every week for those doing their PGDip over 1 year, or once every fortnight for those doing their PGDip over 2 years. The blended learning classes are presented online (and also on campus depending on Covid restrictions). Classes are presented on Tuesday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15, and for some foundation modules on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15. The online classes are presented synchronously with the on-campus classes. The flexibility of digital class attendance means minimum time away from work. The blended learning delivery option opens up access to students from elsewhere in South Africa, from other African countries and even further afield. This also lowers the opportunity cost to obtain this PGDip as you can attend all classes online.
  • Modular classes: Four full blocks of classes spread over the year if you are doing the 1-year PGDip (i.e. morning and afternoon classes from Monday to Friday), or four blocks of either morning or afternoon classes per year if you are doing the two-year PGDip (i.e. morning or afternoon classes from Monday to Friday). The modular classes are presented on campus, which translates into in-class experience and focused studies without work interruptions.

In addition to learning about the tools required to measure the future, you will encounter ways and means of designing a more desired future. Indeed, this is the spirit that drives Futures Studies – we can, if we so wish, conspire to co-create the future we want. This qualification is therefore aimed at those people who wish to enhance their understanding of possible changes in their long-term future and their ability to respond accordingly. This is particularly important for the development of a growing number of open-minded citizens and institutions capable of displaying a holistic understanding of the social, ethical, political, technical and economic forces shaping the future.

  • How: The SHL test is online. You will be provided with a link after payment of the relevant fees.

It analyses the interaction between a wide range of variables or forces, and distils from these forces those issues that will affect the future of a country, government, entity or individual. It studies the world of economics, politics, technology, demography, social values and other subject fields, both locally and globally. It equips decision makers with ways to deal with change and to make the right decisions to survive but preferably thrive in a changing world. Overview

The modules of the PGDip in Future Studies are split into a foundation phase (covering skills, frameworks and tools you can apply in any field of work) and a specialisation phase (programme-specific modules).

You need to do 4 of the following 5 foundation phase modules:

  • Term 1: Understanding the World (compulsory)
  • Term 2: Responsible Leadership (compulsory)
  • Term 3: Thinking Frameworks (compulsory)
  • Term 4: Organisational Behaviour OR Managing Risk and Uncertainty

Next, you need to do the four specialisation phase modules:

  • Term 1: Principles of Futures Studies
  • Term 2: Applied Philosophy
  • Term 3: Measuring and Making the Future
  • Term 4: Futures Studies in Practice

Choose between 2 formats: Blended learning and modular

  • Blended Learning classes: Late-afternoon classes once every week for those doing their PGDip over 1 year, or once every fortnight for those doing their PGDip over 2 years. The blended learning classes are presented online (and also on campus depending on Covid restrictions). Classes are presented on Tuesday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15, and for some foundation modules on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15. The online classes are presented synchronously with the on-campus classes. The flexibility of digital class attendance means minimum time away from work. The blended learning delivery option opens up access to students from elsewhere in South Africa, from other African countries and even further afield. This also lowers the opportunity cost to obtain this PGDip as you can attend all classes online.
  • Modular classes: Four full blocks of classes spread over the year if you are doing the 1-year PGDip (i.e. morning and afternoon classes from Monday to Friday), or four blocks of either morning or afternoon classes per year if you are doing the two-year PGDip (i.e. morning or afternoon classes from Monday to Friday). The modular classes are presented on campus, which translates into in-class experience and focused studies without work interruptions.

This qualification is therefore aimed at those people who wish to enhance their understanding of possible changes in their long-term future and their ability to respond accordingly. This is particularly important for the development of a growing number of open-minded citizens and institutions capable of displaying a holistic understanding of the social, ethical, political, technical and economic forces shaping the future.

As the only programme of its kind presented in Africa, and one of only a few in the world, it will equip you with high-level competencies to react meaningfully to growing complexity in the organisational environment while taking into account the unique developmental challenges of Africa and South Africa. These challenges typically include health deficits, education deficits, global participation and human security.

Academic qualifications and other admission criteria

 

  • Academic qualifications: An appropriate Bachelor’s degree
  • Work experience: A minimum of two years of experience in strategic management or strategic planning
  • Selection test: SHL selection test (see below). This test is done online.
  • Essay: You need to write an essay (see below).
  • Additional documentation: A comprehensive CV indicating your work experience.

You need to complete the SHL abilities selection test as part of your application process. The test consists of verbal, numerical and inductive reasoning tests that are used for selection, and identification of your development areas.

He lectures on Economics and Futures Thinking at USB, in other African countries and in Europe. Academic assistance is offered via a web-based learning environment, various software and database resources, small-team study groups, informal learning groups and tutorials for certain modules.

Yes, students can spread the payment of their fees:

  • Payment of full programme fees for South African students: Students pay a set deposit on admittance. Students on the 1-year PGDip can pay the full programme fees upon registration or they can pay 75% of the annual fees by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. Students on the 2-year PGDip can spread their payment over 2 years.
  • Payment of full programme fees for international students: International admitted students on the 1-year PGDip pay 50% of the annual fee as deposit. The remainder is due 2 weeks before commencement of the programme. International admitted students on the 2-year PGDip can spread their payment over 2 years.

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for international applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries. Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for international students. RPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Write a research assignment of 15 000 to 25 000 words on a development finance topic, preferably one that is of professional interest to you. You can work on your research assignment while you are doing your course work and electives. Through this research assignment you will learn how to:

  • Identify and describe a research problem and goal in the field of development finance
  • Become acquainted with relevant literature in this field
  • Critically to apply research methods and techniques
  • Present your material in a logical, clear and systematic way
  • Show your capacity for independent, self-managed learning and critical reflection on the research process.

To apply for the MPhil Development Finance you must meet the following requirements:

  • An appropriate Honours degree (the first postgraduate degree after a Bachelor’s degree) or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, accounting or commerce; OR
  • A 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma (120 SAQA credits) from a university or a university of technology in business, finance, economics, accounting or commerce; OR
  • A postgraduate degree in any discipline and appropriate experience in the area of development economics and/or finance; AND
  • A sound understanding of quantitative analysis – a good pass/grade for school-leaving mathematics is an advantage.

NOTE: International students require a SAQA evaluation to evaluate your degree according to South African standards.  USB’s International Affairs Office will handle your credential evaluation free of charge.  Please complete an online application, upload all certificates to your application. The international office will conduct an in-house credential evaluation, after we received your submission and application fee, as part of the process.

IMPORTANT: The Bachelor’s or Honours degree must be on a level that is equivalent to the South African qualification. Local and foreign academic qualifications have to be at the NQF 7 level (old) or NQF 8 level (new). This implies that the qualification includes a module in Research Methodology and an individual research paper.

Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council on Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. In order to be admitted to a Master’s programme at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant NQF 8 qualification, such as an Honours degree, 4-year in-depth Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate diploma.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the RPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Master’s degree at USB have to adhere to the following:

 

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required)
  • Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the qualification mentioned above, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating, in detail, areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment
  • Write an assignment of 10 to 15 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) on a topic supplied by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the MDevF programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification. ​
  • Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Research assignment

Write a research assignment of 15 000 to 25 000 words on a development finance topic, preferably one that is of professional interest to you. You can work on your research assignment while you are doing your course work and electives. Through this research assignment you will learn how to:

  • Identify and describe a research problem and goal in the field of development finance
  • Become acquainted with relevant literature in this field
  • Critically to apply research methods and techniques
  • Present your material in a logical, clear and systematic way
  • Show your capacity for independent, self-managed learning and critical reflection on the research process.

The aim of this degree is to offer an internationally recognised academic qualification with content that is relevant in terms of Africa’s development needs. This critical-skills degree is designed to:

  • Fill the skills gaps in the financial industry and in policy-making and regulatory institutions in the development finance environment
  • Better understand the complexities of and manage the different development finance resources available to poor countries, especially in Africa
  • Understand the special problems of finance in developing countries and Africa in particular, and to acquire the skills to operate successfully and to make a meaningful contribution to policy formulation and implementation in this field.
  • Demonstrate appreciation of the emerging financial technologies and their application in the financial services industry.

To apply for the MPhil Development Finance you must meet the following requirements:

  • An appropriate Honours degree (the first postgraduate degree after a Bachelor’s degree) or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, accounting or commerce; OR
  • A 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma (120 SAQA credits) from a university or a university of technology in business, finance, economics, accounting or commerce; OR
  • A postgraduate degree in any discipline and appropriate experience in the area of development economics and/or finance; AND
  • A sound understanding of quantitative analysis – a good pass/grade for school-leaving mathematics is an advantage.

Note: International qualifications require a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. IMPORTANT: The Bachelor’s or Honours degree must be on a level that is equivalent to the South African qualification. Local and foreign academic qualifications have to be at the NQF 7 level (old) or NQF 8 level (new). This implies that the qualification includes a module in Research Methodology and an individual research paper.

Recognition of Prior Learning
USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council on Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. In order to be admitted to a Master’s programme at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant NQF 8 qualification, such as an Honours degree, 4-year in-depth Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate diploma.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the RPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Master’s degree at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification (all school and academic certificates are required)
  • Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the qualification mentioned above, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating, in detail, areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment
  • Write an assignment of 10 to 15 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) on a topic supplied by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the MDevF programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification. ​
  • Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Not necessarily. The Postgraduate Diploma in Development Finance is a natural feeder to the MPhil. In extreme situations we accept exceptional candidates as RPL candidates.

Yes. South African students must pay a set deposit on admittance. 75% of the annual fee is payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. International admitted students pay 50% of the annual fee as deposit. The remainder is due two weeks before commencement of the programme.

Foundation phase modules and specialisation phase modules

The modules of the PGDip BMA are split into a foundation phase (covering skills, frameworks and tools you can apply in any field of work) and a specialisation phase (programme-specific modules).

You need to do 4 of the following 7 foundation phase modules on offer:

  • Term 1: Understanding the World
  • Term 2: Responsible Leadership
  • Term 3: Thinking Frameworks OR Business Analytics OR Managing of Projects
  • Term 4: Organisational Behaviour OR Managing Risk and Uncertainty

You also need to do the 4 specialisation phase modules:

Choose between 2 formats: Blended learning and modular

  • Blended Learning classes: Late-afternoon classes once every week for those doing their PGDip over 1 year, or once every fortnight for those doing their PGDip over 2 years. The blended learning classes are presented online (and also on campus depending on Covid restrictions). Classes are presented on Tuesday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15, and for some foundation modules on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 16:00 till 20:15. The online classes are presented synchronously with the on-campus classes. The flexibility of digital class attendance means minimum time away from work. The blended learning delivery option opens up access to students from elsewhere in South Africa, from other African countries and even further afield. This also lowers the opportunity cost to obtain this postgraduate diploma as you can attend all classes online.
  • Modular classes: Four full blocks of classes spread over the year if you are doing the 1-year PGDip (i.e. morning and afternoon classes from Monday to Friday), or four blocks of either morning or afternoon classes per year if you are doing the two-year PGDip (i.e. morning or afternoon classes from Monday to Friday). The modular classes are presented on campus, which translates into in-class experience and focused studies without work interruptions.

USB recognised the need of managers and entrepreneurs to obtain a formal business management qualification, but not necessarily an MBA. At the same time, USB also recognised the need of those who wanted to prepare themselves for access to an MBA in order to move to senior level positions.

This led to the design of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration (PGDip BMA), presented for the first time in 2015, and to its redesign in 2021 to you even more flexibility and to make it even easier for you to study while you work.

The joint design of the PGDip BMA and MBA at USB allows students to experience an unrivalled learning path when doing the two qualifications in succession. However, the PGDip BMA is also an exit-level qualification that will not leave the graduate who does not want to do the MBA feeling short-changed. The PGDip BMA’s unique focus on general management skills, innovation, entrepreneurship and responsible leadership makes this a meaningful qualification on the African continent.

This PGDip will provide you with a transformative learning experience to acquire the leadership skills, thinking frameworks and capabilities you need to find your way forward – regardless of whether you see your future self in an executive, managerial, specialist or entrepreneurial position.

Academic qualifications and other admission criteria

The following minimum admission criteria are applicable:

  • Academic qualifications: A three-year Bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma at NQF level 7, or higher.
  • Work experience: A minimum of 2 years of relevant full-time work experience (preferably at managerial level).
  • Selection test: SHL selection test (see below). This test is done online.
  • Essay: You need to write an essay (see below).
  • Additional documentation: A comprehensive CV indicating your work experience.
  • Highly recommended: Mathematics at NNS (Grade 12) level or equivalent; proficiency in English.

SHL selection test

You need to complete the SHL abilities selection test as part of your application process. The test consists of verbal, numerical and inductive reasoning tests that are used for selection, and identification of your development areas.

  • Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Preparation: No preparation is required. You are encouraged to perform a practice test to familiarise yourself with the test format at: shl.com/shldirect/en-us/practice-tests/
  • How: The SHL test is online. You will be provided with a link after payment of the relevant fees.
  • When: You can only take the SHL test after starting your application because you will need a provisional student number. The link to the test is supplied after payment of the SHL selection test fee plus the PGDip BMA application fee.

USB aspires to be a source of value for a better world. How are your career goals aligned with being a source of value for a better world, and how would this postgraduate programme assist you in achieving your short-term (2 to 3 years) and long-term (10 years) career goals?

Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education, USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under RPL. RPL candidates need to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective RPL candidates applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification.
  • Have at least ten years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least five years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.

The RPL selection process entails the following:

  • USB’s Admissions Committee (programme head and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • Important: RPL candidates need to apply by 31 October to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Tasneem Motala is a senior lecturer in Operations Management and Process Innovation at USB. Her research interests include the impact of operational interventions (such as automation) on organisational behaviour, process optimisation, blue-collar employee motivation and service excellence. With a background in engineering, she brings a wealth of professional and practical experience to her teaching role. Prior to joining USB as a faculty member in 2016, she worked in the petrochemical industry for nine years. Here, she specialised in process control and optimisation. She holds a cum laude MBA from USB and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Working professionals

  • Managers who wish to complete an MBA but who do not qualify for entry directly into a Master’s programme. Successful completion of the PGDip BMA at a particular standard (65% average) will allow entry into the MBA. Students who did not obtain 65% average are still welcome to apply for the MBA, but will be treated like any other applicant and will have to comply with the full set of admission requirements, including selection tests.
  • Entrepreneurs and managers who want to broaden their management skills, but who do not necessarily want to enrol for an MBA and/or who do not want to do research on MBA level.
  • Managers and leaders who work full-time, who cannot afford lengthy residency periods at USB, and/or who prefer to do most of their learning off-campus.

RPL candidates who wish to enrol for an MBA at USB

  • All Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) candidates who do not have an NQF 6 qualification have to complete an appropriate Postgraduate Diploma before doing the MBA.

FAQs

Yes, the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration provides access to our MBA. Graduates will get recognition for 32 credits (15%) on the MBA.

No. This learn-while-you-earn programme has two formats: a blended learning format which combines on-campus and online classes, and a modular format covered in five on-campus blocks over the year.​​

Students are assessed on an ongoing basis. The final performance mark is based on online assessments, individual and group assignments, class participation, simulations, class presentations and the analysis of case studies. The continuous assessment system implies that there is no opportunity to resubmit assignments to improve grades. Tests take place between block weeks (Modular MBA) or in between classes (Blended Learning MBA), and not during scheduled class times. Tests can be written on campus or via our secure proctoring service from any approved remote location.

All PGDip modules are assessed. Specific timeslots are allocated for assessments. A combination of assessments are used, which may include individual assignments, team assignments and individual tests.

Yes, but on a volunteer basis only. USB alumni offer to mentor students during their studies and to provide career or industry advice. This service is offered in association with USB’s Alumni Relations Office and Career Leadership Office.

Academic assistance is offered via a web-based learning environment, various software and database resources, small-team study groups, informal learning groups and tutorials for certain modules.

Being fully prepared for each class session is extremely important. This starts with the compulsory reading and completion of online work prior to the contact sessions on campus. When you make time available to spend with the learning material prior to each block you will not fall into a pattern of playing catch-up at the time. This will help you to enjoy your studies, contribute in class and succeed in your studies.

Yes, students can spread the payment of their fees:

  • Payment of full programme fees for South African students: Students pay a set deposit on admittance. Students on the 1-year PGDip can pay the full programme fees upon registration or they can pay 75% of the annual fees by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. Students on the 2-year PGDip can spread their payment over 2 years.
  • Payment of full programme fees for international students: International admitted students on the 1-year PGDip pay 50% of the annual fee as deposit. The remainder is due 2 weeks before commencement of the programme. International admitted students on the 2-year PGDip can spread their payment over 2 years.

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for international applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries. Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for international students. RPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 31 October each year.

Yes. This PGDip has been redesigned with this flexibility in mind. This gives you options such as the following:

  • Duration flexibility: Study over 1 year or over 2 years.
  • Format flexibility: Attend classes online (blended learning) or on campus (modular).

If you choose the 1-year PGDip in the blended learning format, you will have 1 late afternoon session once a week. If you choose the 2-year PGDip in the blended learning format, you will have 1 late afternoon session once every fortnight. This means minimum time away from work. The blended-learning classes are delivered synchronously with the on-campus classes. If you opt for the blended-learning classes, you will be able to immerse yourself in a premium learning experience using an internet-linked laptop from wherever you are in the world.

If you choose the 1-year PGDip in the modular format, you will have 4 full modular blocks spread over the year (i.e. mornings and afternoons). If you choose the 2-year PGDip in the modular format, you will have 4 block weeks per year with classes either in the morning or the afternoon. These classes are presented on campus (unless Covid restrictions prevent this, in which case the classes will be presented online). The modular classes provide you with in-class experience and focused studies without work interruptions.
