More about the speakers

Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng is an Acting Executive Chairperson of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa. He is also a member of senate at the Tshwane University of Technology.
Dr Modimoeng holds MBA and PhD (Management Sciences) degrees. He is also a Harvard University Senior Executive Fellow and has completed an Executive Development Programme from Wharton University and Africa Director Programme at Stellenbosch University. He is a Corporate Governance Specialist with global Public Affairs experience.

Theo Venter is a political and policy specialist at the NWU School of Business and Governance. Until 2016 he was also special advisor to the Vice Chancellor of the North West University since 2004. Prior to 2004 he was a lecturer in political science and deputy-director of the Institute for Futures Studies. He is also a political commentator on South African politics, especially on radio and TV for the last 30 years. He consults regularly in the business and agricultural sectors on the state of politics in South Africa.

Our alumni in the United Arab Emirate are invited to join Dr Shaun Vorster, Vice President for Business Programming at Expo 2020, at this special alumni event in Dubai.
He will give insight into hosting the largest event ever staged in the Arab world and the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. The presentation will start at 09:00 and snacks will be served at 10:00 until 10:30. We will end the session with a view from the rooftop balcony on to the site.

Business Breakfast 01 March 2019 Century City
USB alumni are invited to come and enjoy a business breakfast in conjunction with Stellenbosch University (SU) to hear more about the state of South Africa’s economy. Bonang Mohale, chief executive officer (CEO) of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), is the guest speaker and he will talk about South Africa’s economy and the role of the business sector in the country’s public sphere.
USB’s Nthabiseng Moleko, lecturer in Managerial Economics and Statistics, will do the welcoming and alumnus D’Niel Strauss, director of Stocks & Strauss (Pty) Ltd, lecturer and investor, will be the facilitator.

Bonang Mohale was, until his BLSA appointment, vice president upstream and the chairman of Shell downstream South Africa (Pty) Limited; Shell South Africa Holdings (Pty) Ltd; Shell South Africa Refinery (Pty) Ltd and South African Petroleum Refinery (SAPREF). He had country responsibilities for the Oil, Chemical, Aviation, Marine and Lubricants global businesses and was operationally accountable for Retail; Fuels & Bitumen; Supply & Distribution classes of businesses as well as Finance; Legal; HR; Safety (HSSE) and Transformation. He was awarded “The Momentum Friendship Blazer” in recognition of being the first RSA Nation Building Champion in 2015. He has been a guest on numerous international TV, radio and magazine programmes.
More about the facilitators

Commissioner Nthabiseng Moleko lectures in Managerial Economics and Statistics on the Development Finance and MBA programmes at the USB. She holds an MPhil in Development Finance from the University of Stellenbosch Business School and a BusSc Honours (Economics) from the University of Cape Town. In her free time, Nthabiseng works with high school learners, and used to do career fairs and career workshops in the Eastern Cape with students, using poetry, art, media, rap and dance to make the fairs more exciting. She likes to encourage young underprivileged people to pursue education.

D’Niel Strauss is a strategic leader with experience in the private equity and venture capital industries over the past seven years. He has lectured and presented to large groups of people at various events and conferences in China, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and South Africa, which include lectures at the Universities of Pretoria and Stellenbosch respectively. He is a co-founder and director of Stocks & Strauss (Pty) Ltd, and has been involved in the direct and indirect investments of more than 30 companies.

The African Renaissance is the concept that African people and nations shall overcome the current challenges confronting the continent and achieve cultural, scientific, and economic renewal.
The Leader’s Angle series is a forum where local and international knowledge is shared and debate is encouraged. Guest speakers include senior executives of leading companies in South Africa and abroad, opinion leaders, academics and specialists.

Prof André Roux
He is head of the Futures Studies programmes and professor in Management Economics and Africa Country Risk Analysis at USB. Prof Roux holds a PhD in Economics from Stellenbosch University. He has published widely in books and journals, and he has presented many papers at local and international conferences.

Being ethical is easy when everything goes well and there are no pressures, but in the highly competitive environment today, it is not simple and easy anymore. The recent Steinhoff scandal highlighted how even highly trusted and apparently ethical organisations and CEOs can succumb to the lure of unethical behaviour, with devastating consequences.
Join us for the Western Cape Business Networking and AGM on Thursday, 25 October 2018 where USB’s Prof Arnold Smit and Prof Mias de Klerk will discuss, ‘When no-one is looking: Business ethical compass and practices’.
This talk explore how to make the best use of one’s moral compass to remain ethical in business and build one’s success on an ethical reputation, notwithstanding significant business challenges and many seductions to engage in ethically questionable acts.

Prof Arnold Smit
He is the Head of Social Impact and Associate Professor of Business in Society at USB. His teaching, research and facilitation focus on the contextualisation and integration of ethics, responsibility and sustainability in management education and organisational practice. He furthermore facilitates executive development programmes in the areas of values-driven leadership, director development, non-profit leadership, and corporate sustainability and responsibility. He is furthermore a board member of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative, a trustee of SEED Educational Trust and the immediate past president of the Business Ethics Network of Africa.
Prof Mias de Klerk
He is professor in Leadership and Organisational Behaviour at USB, which he joined four years ago. He has 30 years of industry experience and occupied several senior management positions, and also worked as an in-house consultant. Before joining USB, Mias was the Chief Ethics Officer of the Sasol Group. His research and consulting interests include personal meaning and transformation, and behavioural ethics.

Chie Wasserfall
CEO of the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI)
Chie Wasserfall is the Chief Executive Officer of the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) since 1 August 2015. She is an electronics engineer by profession and holds a bachelor’s degree in business management and an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB. Before joining the NSI, Chie was part of the top management of the Namibia’s national telecommunications operator, Telecom Namibia and had been in the company for 21 years. She has been in strategic management position for 17 years and therefore has extensive experience in strategic planning, policy formulation and project management amongst others. Prior to that, she was a senior lecturer at the Polytechnic of Namibia. Chie loves camping not only to de-stress but also to enjoy the simplicity of life.
