Social Impact

Creating Hope for People

For us, social impact is about creating hope for people and advancing change for a flourishing world. This emanates from our teaching, learning, and research as we all together strive to be responsible leaders who work with others to enhance quality of life, create a spirit of generosity, and work for a fair and just society.

Our approach to social impact is embedded in the three interrelated dimensions of responsible leadership: Me (see Our people), We (see Our programmes and projects), and All of Us (see Our voice in society).

Social Impact

It is of great joy to us when:

  • Our students and alumni are responsible leaders and stewards of society
  • Our social sector beneficiaries create outstanding public value
  • Our research and thought leadership impact on public opinion and policy formulation
  • We work with other social impact solutions to create sustainable development priorities

Small Business Academy

The Small Business Academy aims to improve the businesses, and therefore the lives, of small business owners from low-income communities. This is achieved through the nine-month SBA Development Programme, which is currently delivered in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.

USB works with corporate and public-sector sponsors and other stakeholders to deliver this programme. The main (Gold) sponsors are Distell and the Joe Gqabi Economic Development Agency (JoGEDA). Absa is another sponsor in the Western Cape and Silulu Ulutho Technologies from Khayelitsha is a founding sponsor. The SBA was launched in 2012.
