Arnold Smit is Associate Professor of Business in Society at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. His work focuses mainly on the integration of ethics, responsibility and sustainability in management education and organisational practice. He is a member of the Board of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative, a past president of the Business Ethics Network of Africa, a trustee of SEED Educational Trust and Programme Director of the USB-ED Africa Directors’ Programme. During his early career, he was a parish minister, a human resources executive at a financial services company, and a leadership and organisational development consultant.

Overview

This programme is related to the PGDip in Leadership Development. Participants in the PGDip Leadership Development with a focus area in NPOs will follow modules 1, 2, 3 and 7 with the participants of the PGDip in Leadership Development. For modules 4, 5, and 6 the NPO participants will follow the design of the focal programme. This programme is done at a NQF level 8 rating, the equivalent of an Honours level degree.

To apply for the PGDip in Leadership Development with a focus area in NPOs  you must meet the following requirements:

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree (or demonstrated Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning)
  • Proven relevant working experience of five to seven years
  • International students require a SAQA evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. In this regard please contact SAQA at saqainfo@saqa.org.za

Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL.

In order to be admitted to a Postgraduate Diploma at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 7.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification.
  • Have at least TEN years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least FIVE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the abilities to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.

You will qualify to apply, however you still need to meet the additional entrance requirements in order to be accepted for an MBA.

This is a one year programme on campus.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

Prof Manie de Klerk

Prof Manie de Klerk is stream coordinator of the MBA in Health Care Leadership at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. He has worked in various health care sectors in South Africa, both as worker bee and as leader, senior manager and executive manager of, among others, a district health authority and two hospitals. He has also worked in the broader health insurance industry. He has influenced health care legislation, facilities planning, patient care plans, healthcare benefits and quality in the health insurance industry. His interests range from clinical care and leadership to the planning and management of budgets, data, genetics and health futures. He is a qualified Family Physician and holds an M Fam Med and DCH. He is also an MBA graduate of USB.

Research assignment

A research assignment of between 50 and 70 pages and is based on a management-related problem in your work environment or specialisation is required. The purpose of the research assignment is to demonstrate how you can address business challenges through research.

USB’s MBA aims to develop managers, professionals and entrepreneurs into responsible leaders, expert decision makers, strategic thinkers, effective communicators and stewards of society. Our MBA is rigorous, as can be expected from a programme with three international accreditations. It balances solid quantitative modules with personal development and leadership skills. Management tools and techniques from disciplines such as strategic management, economics, operations, finance and marketing are important core competencies of the MBA graduate. This is balanced by competencies such as responsible leadership, communication and understanding the role of business in society in order to develop the skills of adaptability, flexibility, self-awareness and contextual awareness – all of which are in high demand in the business environment. One of the key differentiators of USB’s MBA is the Leadership Module which focuses on responsible leadership and allows you to develop your own authentic leadership style. The International Study Module at a foreign business school offers you a global perspective that supports the other elements of the MBA. Collaborative learning – where students learn from each other – is a key feature of the USB MBA. The unique knowledge from each student adds depth to collaborative learning.

To apply for the MBA Health Care Leadership programme you must meet the following requirements:

The South African Council on Higher Education has raised the entry requirements of the MBA programme in South Africa. Students applying for the MBA are now required to have one of the following qualifications on NQF level 8:

  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8) and at least 3 years of relevant full-time working experience
  • OR Honours degree (NQF level 8), plus 3 years of relevant full-time working experience
  • OR 3-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) plus a postgraduate diploma (NQF level 8) and at least 3 years of relevant working experience

The working experience should preferably be on managerial level. Also note that USB’s one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration (NQF level 8 with 120 credits) is aimed at preparing students for the MBA.

Other requirements:

  • Mathematics at NNS (Grade 12) level or equivalent
  • A comprehensive CV
  • 3 essays, showing the candidate’s level of motivation and working experience (see below)
  • Satisfactory selection test results for either the SHL or GMAT selection tests

FAQ’s

Yes. Health is a dynamic area where scientific knowledge, skills and technologies, behavioural, social and financial paradigms, people in need and resources closely interact. Superimposed on this is rapid change in terms of knowledge, technology, delivery mechanisms and systems, user knowledge, health interfaces and aggressive competition for funding. This dynamic field needs special people to lead and to be practical in the application of their strategic, innovative, financial and management skills.

In your first year of your MBA studies you follow the same 13 core MBA modules of the generalist MBA. Then in your second year you do two stream-specific modules: Health Care Finance and Governance and Health Care Systems and Policy.

Students are assessed on a continuous basis. Each module has a minimum number of assessments based on the number of credits for that module. The final performance mark therefore includes, among others, online assessments, class tests, group work, individual and group assignments, class participation and presentations. Tests for Modular MBA students are scheduled in between blocks. Tests for Full-time MBA students are scheduled into the formal programme. Tests for Blended Learning MBA students are scheduled.

Firstly, relevant work experience is a requirement of USB’s international EQUIS accreditation. Secondly, collaborative learning – where students learn from each other – forms an important part of USB’s MBA. The expertise, depth and value that each participant brings to the class depend largely on authentic work experience.

Tests focus primarily on the application of knowledge and insight to business problems. Hence, most tests are open book and require the analysis of problems or cases. In the assessment of pre-reading, closed-book tests may be used. In web-based assessments of pre-reading multiple-choice questions are frequently used, but this may not exceed 20% of the grade of a subject. Many lecturers make past test papers available as a learning resource.

Yes, but on a volunteer basis only. USB alumni offer to mentor students during their studies and to provide career or industry advice. This service is offered in association with USB’s Alumni Relations Office and Career Services Office.

Academic assistance is offered via a web-based learning environment, various software and database resources, syndicate groups (dedicated study groups), informal learning groups and tutorials for certain modules.

Modular MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and thereafter at the end of every modular block for the following block. Blended Learning MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and at regular intervals thereafter.

Yes. For South African students, 75% of the annual fees are payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. (Foreign students, however, need to pay the full programme fee prior to or upon registration.)

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for foreign applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries.

Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for foreign students.

ARPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Dr Nyambura Mwagiru

Dr Nyambura Mwagiru is coordinator of the MBA stream in Managing International Organisations (MBA MIO) – a joint initiative of USB and the UN’s System Staff College (UNSSC). She is also coordinator of Academic Programmes at USB’s International Affairs Office. She holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business, a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of the Witwatersrand, and a Professional Master’s in Tax Law (LLM) from UCT. Her fields of professional and research expertise include exploring the role of institutional dialogue in governance, policy formulation, and leadership development; African regional economic integration; tax law harmonization; peacebuilding, and institutional partnership building.

A research assignment of between 50 and 70 pages and is based on a management-related problem in your work environment or specialisation is required. The purpose of the research assignment is to demonstrate how you can address business challenges through research.

Our MBA is rigorous, as can be expected from a programme with three international accreditations. It balances solid quantitative modules with personal development and leadership skills. This is balanced by competencies such as responsible leadership, communication and understanding the role of business in society in order to develop the skills of adaptability, flexibility, self-awareness and contextual awareness – all of which are in high demand in the business environment. One of the key differentiators of USB’s MBA is the Leadership Module which focuses on responsible leadership and allows you to develop your own authentic leadership style. The International Study Module at a foreign business school offers you a global perspective that supports the other elements of the MBA. To apply for the MBA Managing International Organisations programme you must meet the following requirements:

The South African Council on Higher Education has raised the entry requirements of the MBA programme in South Africa. Students applying for the MBA are now required to have one of the following qualifications on NQF level 8:

  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8) and at least 3 years of relevant full-time working experience
  • OR Honours degree (NQF level 8), plus 3 years of relevant full-time working experience
  • OR 3-year Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) plus a postgraduate diploma (NQF level 8) and at least 3 years of relevant working experience

The working experience should preferably be on managerial level. Also note that USB’s one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration (NQF level 8 with 120 credits) is aimed at preparing students for the MBA.

Other requirements:

  • Mathematics at NNS (Grade 12) level or equivalent
  • A comprehensive CV
  • 3 essays, showing the candidate’s level of motivation and working experience (see below)
  • Satisfactory selection test results for either the SHL or GMAT selection tests

In your first year of your MBA studies you follow the same 13 core MBA modules of the generalist MBA. Then in your second year you do two stream-specific modules: International Organisations Leadership and Finance for Development. These streams have been designed to equip managers and leaders with the tools, theories and frameworks to lead successfully in a complex global environment.

Upon applying for the general MBA, you need to indicate MBA MIO as your preference. After your first year in the programme, you will follow the MIO stream.

If you are looking for a meaningful career – one of helping others – and if you want to do so by taking up as senior position in an international organisation in the not-for-profit sector, then the MBA MIO will serve you well.

This degree with its strong focus on the management of international organisations will enable you to fill a managerial or leadership position at organisations such as the UN (or any of its agencies – like the World Health Organization or International Fund for Agricultural Development), or at an international capacity-building organisation, policy and advocacy organisation, or foundation in the not-for-profit sector.

Students are assessed on a continuous basis. Each module has a minimum number of assessments based on the number of credits for that module. The final performance mark therefore includes, among others, online assessments, class tests, group work, individual and group assignments, class participation and presentations. Tests for Modular MBA students are scheduled in between blocks. Tests for Full-time MBA students are scheduled into the formal programme. Tests for Blended Learning MBA students are scheduled.

Firstly, relevant work experience is a requirement of USB’s international EQUIS accreditation. Secondly, collaborative learning – where students learn from each other – forms an important part of USB’s MBA. The expertise, depth and value that each participant brings to the class depend largely on authentic work experience.

Tests focus primarily on the application of knowledge and insight to business problems. Hence, most tests are open book and require the analysis of problems or cases. In the assessment of pre-reading, closed-book tests may be used. In web-based assessments of pre-reading multiple-choice questions are frequently used, but this may not exceed 20% of the grade of a subject. Many lecturers make past test papers available as a learning resource.

Yes, but on a volunteer basis only. USB alumni offer to mentor students during their studies and to provide career or industry advice. This service is offered in association with USB’s Alumni Relations Office and Career Services Office.

Academic assistance is offered via a web-based learning environment, various software and database resources, syndicate groups (dedicated study groups), informal learning groups and tutorials for certain modules.

Modular MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and thereafter at the end of every modular block for the following block. Blended Learning MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and at regular intervals thereafter.

Yes. For South African students, 75% of the annual fees are payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. (Foreign students, however, need to pay the full programme fee prior to or upon registration.)

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for foreign applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries.

Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for foreign students.

ARPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

USB’s MBA has been designed to turn managers, professionals, specialists and entrepreneurs into responsible leaders, expert decision makers, strategic thinkers, effective communicators and stewards of society. If you are aiming towards senior management positions and leadership roles, the MBA will prepare you for this.

International Study Module

All MBA students need to do the compulsory International Study Module to enhance their international exposure. The cost of this module is included in the MBA study fees at a fixed dollar rate. The aim of this module is to develop managers with a global mind-set, to prepare them for work in a global environment, and to help them understand cultural differences in order to turn cultural competence into a competitive advantage. The module includes company visits and cultural activities.

In 2017, MBA study visits have been arranged to these countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Rwanda & Kenya, Turkey, Singapore, Slovenia, UK and USA.

South African Academic Tour for full-time MBA students

All full-time MBA students go on a week-long South African tour (over and above International Study Module). The purpose of the tour is to expose students to a range of local industries, giving them the opportunity to see first-hand how theory is turned into practice. The tour includes cultural activities as well as engagement with local entrepreneurs and leaders from industry.
The Academic Tour of the 2018 included a bus trip from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, visiting, among others, the Eskom Palmiet plant near Grabouw, Denel Test Range in the Overberg, PetroSA in Mossel Bay, Untouched Adventures at Storms River Mouth, Volkswagen SA in Uitenhage and the Coega Industrial Development Zone in Port Elizabeth. From there, the group flew to Johannesburg where they visited Dimension Data, the Ethics Institute of SA in Sandton, and the Cradle of the Humankind in Maropeng.

The Research Assignment Module counts for 45 SAQA credits and comprises three distinct activities of learning:

  • MBA with generalist modules: This programme is aimed at those who want to manage the functional areas of any business, in any industry, at senior manage level (career switchers).
  • MBA with modules focused on Managing International Organisations (MBA MIO): This programme is for those who want domain expertise at senior management level in the management of international organisations, including multinational for-profit organisations, development agencies, NGOs and the UN system. This includes professionals or managers who want to expand their cross-border agility and those who want to fast-track their careers in international organisations. The MBA MIO will therefore appeal to private-sector managers looking for employment opportunities with international development organisations or multinational for-profits as well as UN staff looking to strengthen their management skills, either within the UN system or in any international organisation.
  • MBA with modules focused on Health Care Leadership: This programme is aimed at those who want domain expertise at senior management level in Health Care Leadership to apply in the public or private health care industry. Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL. Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective Masters in Business Administration students have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification.
  • Have at least SIX years of working experience after obtaining the above-mentioned qualification, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the ability to cope with the demands of the Masters in Business Administration programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • Note that ARPL candidates need to apply by 31 October each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

USB’s Bursary Scheme provides partial bursaries and financial assistance to a number of deserving students who have been admitted to the MBA full-time programme.

  • Only students who have been accepted onto the MBA full-time programme may apply for a bursary.
  • All the bursaries will be awarded on academic merit.
  • Applicants from previously disadvantaged groups (in the case of South Africans) will be given preference.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of financial need and not be recipients of any other form of study sponsorship (e.g. from their companies).

USB believes leaders are developed, not born. Therefore, each Masters in Business Administration student follows a bespoke Personal Leadership Development Journey in the Leadership Development Module. This journey focuses on personal leadership, relationship leadership and organisational or strategic leadership to deliver organisational performance. On this journey, you will acquaint yourself with the theory and practice of responsible leadership through:

As part of the selection process, you need to complete either an SHL or GMAT selection test, which are both internationally recognised. The SHL test can be completed through USB, while the GMAT can be completed through www.mba.com.

SHL

The SHL test consists of four sections:

  • Verbal critical reasoning assessment
  • Numerical critical reasoning assessment
  • Inductive reasoning test
  • Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ) on behavioural preferences

No preparation is required and it will take approximately 3 hours to complete. However, you can only take the test after you have begun the MBA application process as you will need a provisional student number to complete the test. The total cost of this process is R3 900 (R2 900 SHL test + R1 000 MBA application fee).

This depends on whether you can take a year off to do the full-time Masters in Business Administration or whether you have to study while you work. Secondly, this depends on where you live – close to the campus or further afield.

The one-year Full-time Masters in Business Administration is aimed at those who want to prepare themselves for a career change and who want to immerse themselves in their studies without the demands of a full-time job. The experience of the Full-time Masters in Business Administration students is fundamentally different from that of the Modular Masters in Business Administration and Blended Learning students. They typically experience more cohesion within the class set-up. They also make optimal use of speaker events, networking events and other opportunities in class and on campus. In 2017, 93% of the Full-time Masters in Business Administration cohort graduated within the one year.

The short-block Modular MBA (various one-week blocks spread over two years) is aimed at those who want to study while they work. This allows you to start implementing your newly acquired skills at work right from the start. This format allows you to study at USB even if you live further afield as you only need to travel to USB a few times a year.

The Blended Learning MBA has one on-campus study block at the start of Year 1 and two on-campus blocks during Year 2. In between, you attend weekly classes online (via any internet-linked device) or on campus. You can immediately start to implement your new skills at work. This format requires minimum leave from work. Also, it lowers the opportunity cost as it reduces travel costs.

All of these tests are recognised internationally, and USB accepts all of them. The tests measure language skills, verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and learning potential. The SHL selection test is usually the preferred option for most students who hold a degree recognised by Stellenbosch University. No preparation is required for the SHL.

Students are assessed on a continuous basis. Each module has a minimum number of assessments based on the number of credits for that module. The final performance mark therefore includes, among others, online assessments, class tests, group work, individual and group assignments, class participation and presentations. Tests for Modular MBA students are scheduled in between blocks. Tests for Full-time MBA students are scheduled into the formal programme. Tests for Blended Learning MBA students are scheduled.

Firstly, relevant work experience is a requirement of USB’s international EQUIS accreditation. Secondly, collaborative learning – where students learn from each other – forms an important part of USB’s MBA. The expertise, depth and value that each participant brings to the class depend largely on authentic work experience.

Tests focus primarily on the application of knowledge and insight to business problems. Hence, most tests are open book and require the analysis of problems or cases. In the assessment of pre-reading, closed-book tests may be used. In web-based assessments of pre-reading multiple-choice questions are frequently used, but this may not exceed 20% of the grade of a subject. Many lecturers make past test papers available as a learning resource.

Yes. Graduates of this postgraduate diploma continuing with USB’s MBA will get recognition for 32 credits (15%) on the MBA.

The focus of the MBA programme is on collaborative learning. Every participant brings certain expertise to the class – some through formal learning, others through informal learning. If the most knowledgeable persons were to be exempted from classes, the learning experience for the whole class will be impaired. Thus, as a general principle, no exemption is granted. In a limited number of special cases, for example where an MBA student transfers from another university to USB, or the content of a USB-ED programme is identical to the MBA content, exemption could be considered. Applications will only be considered after the applicant has registered for the MBA programme. Graduates of USB’s Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration who pass at a certain level and who continue with USB’s MBA will get recognition for 32 credits (15%) on the MBA.

Yes, but on a volunteer basis only. USB alumni offer to mentor students during their studies and to provide career or industry advice. This service is offered in association with USB’s Alumni Relations Office and Career Services Office.

Academic assistance is offered via a web-based learning environment, various software and database resources, syndicate groups (dedicated study groups), informal learning groups and tutorials for certain modules.

This will depend on each lecturer and on the subject – as some subjects require a substantial amount of group work, while others require limited group work. The weight varies from 0% (no group work) up to 40%. It is imperative that MBA students can communicate electronically to work on their assignments. There is no need to meet physically.

Full-time MBA students will receive their first batch of study material (books and course outlines) three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and thereafter at the end of every term for the following term.

Modular MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and thereafter at the end of every modular block for the following block. Blended Learning MBA students will receive their first batch of study material three weeks prior to the beginning of the programme and at regular intervals thereafter.

Yes. For South African students, 75% of the annual fees are payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. (Foreign students, however, need to pay the full programme fee prior to or upon registration.)

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for foreign applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries.

Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for foreign students.

ARPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

A limited number of bursaries are available through USB and USB Alumni Association’s Future Fund Trust.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

Tasneem Motala is a senior lecturer in Operations Management and Process Innovation at USB. Her research interests include the impact of operational interventions (such as automation) on organisational behaviour, process optimisation, blue-collar employee motivation and service excellence. With a background in engineering, she brings a wealth of professional and practical experience to her teaching role. Prior to joining USB as a faculty member in 2016, she worked in the petrochemical industry for nine years. Here, she specialised in process control and optimisation. She holds a cum laude MBA from USB and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

USB recognised the need of managers and entrepreneurs to obtain a formal management qualification, but not necessarily an MBA. At the same time, USB also recognised the need of those who wanted to prepare themselves for access to an MBA in order to move to senior level positions.

This led to the design of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration (PGDip BMA), presented for the first time in 2015.

The joint design of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration and MBA at USB allows students to experience an unrivaled learning path when doing the two qualifications in succession. However, the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration is also an exit-level qualification that will not leave the graduate who do not want to do the MBA feeling short-changed. The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration’s unique focus on general management skills, innovation, entrepreneurship and strong grounding in technology, both in terms of the delivery process and content, makes this a meaningful qualification on the African continent.

The golden thread of entrepreneurship and innovation runs through all the functional modules. By applying the learning in their own work environment students see the return on their investment while studying. The unique delivery method of the blended-learning option in particular significantly lowers opportunity cost and turns the student cohort into a diverse community that enhances the learning experience beyond the content conveyed by faculty.

The following minimum admission criteria are applicable:

  • Academic qualifications: A three-year Bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma at NQF level 7, or higher.
  • Work experience: A minimum of two years of relevant full-time work experience (preferably at a managerial level).
  • Selection test: The SHL and GMAT test are done online. (See information under Selection Tests tab).
  • Additional documentation: A comprehensive CV indicating your work experience. Two essays (max 500 words each) – one on your external development and one your personal development.
  • Highly recommended: Mathematics at NNS (Grade 12) level or equivalent; proficiency in English.
  • International students require a SAQA evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. In this regard please contact SAQA at saqainfo@saqa.org.za

Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL.

In order to be admitted to a Postgraduate Diploma at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 7.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification.
  • Have at least TEN years of working experience after obtaining a school ​leaving certificate, of which at least FIVE years should have been in a management or ​related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the abilities to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification.
  • Note that ARPL candidates need to apply early to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.​

Yes. For South African students, 75% of the annual fees are payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. (Foreign students, however, need to pay the full programme fee prior to or upon registration.)

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for foreign applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries.

Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for foreign students.

ARPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

Overview

This programme focuses on strategic project management and upper management skills to produce professional project managers. The modules include risk, procurement, communication and cost management, as well as project leadership.

The programme content is covered from a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective that will help you to understand and manage the complex, multi-dimensional challenges faced by top-level project managers. The programme requires high-level engagement with theoretical frameworks and international literature, and reflection on national and international project management practices.

You are required to research and analyse the areas covered in the programme, and to formulate recommendations that indicate critical intellectual engagement and independent thinking. The programme will widen access to advanced learning in business, commerce, management and project management for students who do not have formal qualifications above Bachelor’s degrees. Passed at a certain level, it can provide access to an MBA. It will also enable graduates to gain Continuing Professional Development points to satisfy the requirements of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

To apply for the PGDip in Project Management you must meet the following requirements:

  • A relevant Bachelor’s or Honours degree
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a project management position in an organisation
  • Communication and management skills equal to NQF Level 4
  • ARPL candidates must have at least 10 years of work experience in project management and a portfolio of proven comparable competencies

Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL.

In order to be admitted to a Postgraduate Diploma at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant degree or National Diploma at NQF level 7.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Postgraduate Diploma at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 4 qualification.
  • Have at least TEN years of working experience after obtaining a school leaving certificate, of which at least FIVE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information of activities outside the work environment.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the abilities to cope with the demands of the Postgraduate Diploma, he/she may be admitted.

Overview

The MPhil in Management Coaching provides you with the skills to establish your credentials as a management coach.

Core Modules

This modular programme runs over two years. Apart from a two-day introduction, you are required to attend four class contact blocks (of a week each) on campus during the first year and complete the final block and research assignment during the second year.

  • Phase 1 – class programme: You have to attend four blocks of one week each on the USB campus during Year 1. Five modules are covered during these blocks. You will be exposed to various models to discover your own particular framework for coaching. Coaching practice, case studies and assignments form part of this phase of the programme.
  • Phase 2 – professional assessment: Your coaching competence is assessed in terms of your ability to convey your personal coaching approach and style, and to authentically display your coaching skills. This phase takes one week at the beginning of Year 2.
  • Phase 3 – research and development: During year 2 you will complete a research project. You will be assigned a research supervisor to guide you through the process. From 2020 a gated approach will be followed whereby a student will submit a number of mini research assignments throughout the year, building up to the final research report. Blended lectures (with the option of attending in person or virtually) will be given preceding each hand-in gate.
  • Throughout – triad practice, supervision and coaching: A significant part of the your journey is to coach and be coached. You must complete 40 hours of coaching and receive 20 hours of coaching (all of which is self-funded).

Programme Structure

This work-based, modular programme (block release programme) runs over two years. Apart from a two-day introduction, participants are required to attend four class contact blocks (of a week each) on campus during the first year and complete the final block and a research assignment during the second year. This will allow students to work full-time while they study. It will also enable working professionals from all over South Africa and beyond its borders to register for the programme.

The learning philosophy is based on the integration of theory and practice, finding your authentic coaching style, international application with local specialisation, practical experience and extensive support.

  • Write an assignment of at least 10 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) with references about a coaching topic, provided by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional abilities. These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.

Not at all. The experiences of our students is that the course is suited to any career that involves managing people.

There are four modules plus a research assignment.

Students are required to attend all classes on campus. This work-based, modular programme (block release programme) runs over two years.

Yes, there is a comfortable lodge on the campus (Bellvista Lodge – www.usb.ac.za/bellvista), which is ideal for short-term accommodation. However, this will probably be too expensive for longer stays. Once you have been admitted on the MBA and your deposit has been paid, your course administrator will give you guidance on finding other accommodation options, such as a room or flat.

Professor Michael Graham received his PhD from the University of Vaasa, Finland, and was an Associate Professor of Finance at Stockholm Business School in Sweden before being appointed as Professor in Finance at USB. His research interests are in corporate finance, corporate governance and financial markets.

The elective modules have been grouped together in specialization streams and students are expected to choose an elective from each group. Select any 3 electives from the following groups:

Research assignment

Write a research assignment of 15 000 – 25 000 words on a development finance topic, preferably one that is of direct professional interest to you. You can work on your research assignment while you are doing your course work and electives.

The aim of this degree is to offer an internationally recognised academic qualification with content that is relevant in terms of Africa’s development needs. This critical-skills degree is designed to:

  • Fill the skills gaps in the financial industry and in policy-making and regulatory institutions in the development finance environment
  • Better understand the complexities of and manage the different development finance resources available to poor countries, especially in Africa
  • Understand the special problems of finance in developing countries and Africa in particular, and to acquire the skills to operate successfully and to make a meaningful contribution to policy formulation and implementation in this field.

To apply for the MPhil Development Finance you must meet the following requirements:

  • An appropriate Honours degree (the first postgraduate degree after a Bachelor’s degree) or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, accounting or commerce; OR
  • A 3-year Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma (120 SAQA credits) from a university or a university of technology in business, finance, economics, accounting or commerce; OR
  • A postgraduate degree in any discipline and appropriate experience in the area of development economics and/or finance; AND
  • A sound understanding of quantitative analysis – a good pass/grade for school-leaving mathematics is an advantage.
  • International students require a SAQA evaluation certificate to evaluate your degree according to South African standards. In this regard please contact SAQA at saqainfo@saqa.org.za

IMPORTANT: The Bachelor’s or Honours degree must be on a level that is equivalent to the South African qualification. Local and foreign academic qualifications have to be at the NQF 7 level (old) or NQF 8 level (new). This implies that the qualification includes a module in Research Methodology and an individual research paper.

Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning

USB provides wider access to its programmes through its Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) process. In line with the requirements of the Council for Higher Education (CHE), USB may admit up to 10% of its student body under ARPL.

In order to be admitted to a Master’s programme at USB, candidates should be in possession of a relevant NQF 8 qualification, such as an Honours degree, 4-year in-depth Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate diploma.

Candidates who wish to be admitted under the ARPL policy will firstly have to submit all the documentation and tests as required for all prospective students. In addition, prospective students applying for a Master’s degree at USB have to adhere to the following:

  • Have at least an NQF 6 qualification.
  • Have at least SIXyears of working experience after obtaining the qualification mentioned in 1, of which at least THREE years should have been in a management or related professional position.
  • Submit a comprehensive CV, indicating detailed areas of responsibility as well as information on activities outside the work environment.
  • Write an assignment of 10 to 15 pages (11-point font size with 1.5 spacing) on a topic supplied by the programme head. The assignment must contain a signed declaration of own work.
  • Provide USB with at least two references (typically current or former line heads) who can testify about the candidate’s managerial or related professional These references will be required to give a detailed personal reference about the candidate on forms provided by USB.
  • Next, USB’s Admissions Committee (head of the programme and another academic) will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate.
  • If the Committee is of the opinion that the candidate has the abilities to cope with the demands of the MDevF programme, he/she may be admitted.
  • A recommendation of admission is sent via USB’s Academic Planning Committee to the Board of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences for notification. ​
  • ARPL candidates need to apply by 30 September each year to allow sufficient time for the assessment process.

Not necessarily. The Postgraduate Diploma in Development Finance is a natural feeder to the MPhil. In extreme situations we accept exceptional candidates as RPL candidates.

Yes, you can apply through Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL).

Yes. For South African students, 75% of the annual fees are payable by the end of May and the balance of 25% by the end of September. Foreign students, however, need to pay the full programme fee prior to or upon registration.

USB supports the principle of recognition of prior academic learning, although this is only applied in very selective instances, because group work and collaborative learning are cornerstones of the USB MBA. To obtain an MBA degree at USB, a student must be registered at Stellenbosch University for at least two years and at least 50% of the credits have to be obtained at this University. A student who has been admitted to the MBA programme may apply for accreditation of prior learning, provided that it was obtained on another MBA programme. Students wanting to apply for accreditation of credits obtained elsewhere need to supply:

  • An application which includes full course outlines, number of SAQA credits, learning outcomes, number of class contact hours, prescribed textbooks, method and weights of assessment, and outcomes or topics per class session.
  • Additional work or assessments may be required.

Study Loans for students from West Africa: Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, with its headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria, has partnered with the USB to provide loan facilities for tuition expenses to USB students in West Africa. The MaxAdvance facility is a time loan or term loan that aims to meet a range of personal needs for students.

If you are a junior or mid-level manager who is interested in a career in development finance, this is the programme you should consider. Students who apply for this programme come from a variety of industries such as banking, financial services, NGOs or public institutions.

Core Modules

This programme provides skills to managers in the development finance environment to enable them implement and manage the design and financing of interventions that will help to grow South Africa as well as the greater Africa. The programme therefore equips lower level to mid-level managers with the know-how to:

  • Provide financial and operational input in terms of development finance issues
  • Identify development projects or policies
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of structured policies and interventions to finance development needs, especially in Africa.

The value of this programme also lies in the integration of theory and practice, and in global business knowledge with African contextualisation. Students are provided with comprehensive support throughout the programme.

To apply for the PGDip in Development Finance you must meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Commerce or Management OR
  • Any other 3-year Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience OR
  • Recognition of prior learning

The closing dates for each programme appear on the web page for that programme. In general, the closing dates for foreign applicants from non-SADC African countries and rest of world close approximately three months prior to the closing date for applicants from South Africa and (visa-exempt) SADC countries.

Obtaining a study permit (study visa) from the South African authorities takes up to 12 weeks from the date of being offered a place on a programme at USB – hence the early application deadline for foreign students.

ARPL candidates (all programmes) need to apply by 30 October each year. Late applications after the closing dates will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
