EventsInternationalising the South African Dispute Resolution and Civil Justice Systems The Africa Centre for Dispute Settlement at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, and the Mandela Institute at the School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand, are pleased to present an afternoon discussion session in the above series on Global Trends in Civil Litigation: implications for South African Lawyers.The session will present information on and assessments of changes to civil litigation systems in several common law countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, with some references to developments in Europe. It will refer to Litigation Management, The Less Adversarial Trial, Court-Connected ADR, Managing Issues Relating to Witnesses, Changing Practices in Costs Orders, Emerging Law of Mediation and ADR, and Policy Issues in the Changing Roles of Courts. There will be particular reference to the changing roles of lawyers in the face of modifications to litigation and dispute resolution systems. Your presenters: Hon. Murray Kellam, who has 26 years experience on the Bench and Tribunals in Victoria, Australia. He has served as President of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration and chair of the National ADR Advisory Council. He has been intimately involved in changes in litigation systems from both policy and practice perspectives, and has worked extensively on these issues in Asia and the Pacific.Prof Laurence Boulle, Director of the Mandela Institute, School of Law, University of the Witwatersrand. His books on mediation and ADR have been published in seven countries, he has practised as a mediator for 20 years and for two terms he chaired the policy advisory council on ADR to the Australian federal government. Prof Barney Jordaan, extraordinary professor at the USB and head of its Africa Centre for Dispute Settlement. He is a senior arbitrator and mediator, accredited with the IMI, and has been involved in ADR since the 1980s.
